Magnolia is a well-known ornamental flowering tree that blooms in early spring. Its flowers are large and understatedly elegant, and they usually open before the leaves emerge. Its flower language is generally understood as gratitude, purity and noble character, and some also extend it to mean sincere affection and fine virtue. Because the flowers cover the whole tree when in bloom and carry a subtle fragrance, magnolia has been loved since ancient times and is often used to express gratitude and respect.

Magnolias of different flower colors carry slightly different meanings. White magnolia (Magnolia denudata) symbolizes pure love and noble character, making it suitable for expressing sincere good wishes; purple magnolia, also called xinyi (Magnolia liliiflora), has a flower language mostly related to tender feelings and longing, making it suitable for someone you hold in your heart; yellow magnolia is relatively rare and is often seen as a symbol of preciousness and nobility. When giving flowers, distinguishing them by color allows you to express your feelings more aptly.

On a cultural level, magnolia is often associated with the character of a gentleman and is widely planted in gardens and courtyards. The spectacle of it flowering before leafing out, with the whole tree covered in blossoms, is quite magnificent, and it is one of the important ornamental trees of early spring. Besides being grown in the ground for viewing, magnolia can also be used as a courtyard accent, adding a touch of brightness to early spring.

A common problem is that the magnolia flowering period is relatively short, so making the blooms last longer requires extra effort in care. Magnolia prefers an environment with ample sunlight, deep soil and good drainage; supplying appropriate water and nutrients before and after the flowering period helps reduce flower drop. After learning its flower language, growing a magnolia lets you not only enjoy its beauty but also feel the fine meanings it carries.
