Interpreting the Meaning of Narcissus Flower Language: A Symbol of Purity, Elegance, Good Fortune and Reunion
Narcissus is a traditional ornamental flower in China, a perennial herb belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, and is mostly grown in water for ornamental viewing during winter and spring. Its elegant flower form, paired with a faint delicate fragrance, leads people to center its flower language on purity and elegance, and it is often used to describe a character that is noble and unstained by worldly matters.
More specifically, the flower language of Chinese narcissus (Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis) is mostly associated with longing, reunion and good fortune, so it is often treated as a Lunar New Year flower, placed at home to add a festive atmosphere. The common yellow narcissus and other Western narcissi, by contrast, lean toward expectation and new life in their flower language, which is related to their habit of blooming in early spring; the legend of the beautiful youth in Greek mythology who gazed at his own reflection by the water also gives it a touch of symbolism for narcissism and aloof pride.
In terms of use, narcissus is suitable for giving to elders or friends, expressing respect, blessings and beautiful hopes, and giving it around the Spring Festival is especially fitting. When growing it in water at home, choose plump, firm bulbs and provide clean water and ample light, and it will send up stems and bloom on schedule, bringing the auspicious meaning in its flower language tangibly into your life.
It should be noted that during water culture, if the water is unclean or the temperature is unsuitable, problems such as root rot, lodging or failure to bloom can easily occur. Changing the water promptly, controlling the water level and providing light help the plant grow robustly, allowing the flowering period to arrive smoothly and letting this floral symbolism be fully expressed.
