Dianthus barbatus (sweet William) is a herbaceous flowering plant in the genus Dianthus, family Caryophyllaceae, generally referring to the bearded dianthus group, and is also often called American dianthus or ten-variety brocade. It is a perennial plant, but in cultivation is usually treated as an annual or biennial; the plant form is upright, the leaves are slender and opposite, and the small flowers cluster densely in groups at the tips of the branches, with fine teeth along the edges of the petals, giving the whole a touch of plum blossom charm, from which its name is also derived. The flower colors are fairly rich, with red, pink, white and various bicolor varieties commonly seen.

In terms of habits, Dianthus barbatus likes a cool, dry, sunny environment, has good cold tolerance, does not tolerate high temperatures and high humidity, and especially fears long-term waterlogging of the potting soil. It is not demanding about soil, but grows better in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam, and is suitable for spring planting and viewing in most regions.

For home care, it is usually propagated by sowing; after the seedlings grow to a suitable size, they are transplanted with the soil around the roots, and during the recovery stage strong direct sunlight should be avoided. For daily watering, water when the soil is dry and let it dry between waterings; before budding and blooming, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can be added appropriately, and after the flowers fade, spent flowers should be cut off promptly, which both reduces nutrient consumption and helps keep the plant form tidy and extend the overall viewing period.

If yellowing leaves appear during care, it is mostly related to overwatering, poor ventilation or insufficient light, and the watering frequency and placement position need to be adjusted promptly. Dianthus barbatus has bright flower colors and concentrated blooming, and is suitable for arranging flower beds and flower borders, and can also be potted to accent a balcony, or used as cut flowers in vases; its ornamental value is relatively high.
