Mosquito repellent plants usually refer to scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), though some sellers also group lemon grass, rosemary and other fragrant plants together under the name mosquito repellent plant. These plants contain volatile substances such as citronellal and geraniol, and their leaves release a distinctive fragrance when touched or stirred by the wind. It is this scent that is believed to have a certain repellent effect on mosquitoes.

Objectively speaking, mosquito repellent plants do have some effect, but you cannot expect them to solve the problem once and for all. They repel mosquitoes by scent rather than killing them, and the effect is relatively noticeable in smaller, less ventilated spaces such as bedrooms and balconies; in open, well-ventilated places like yards and terraces, the scent is quickly diluted and the effect drops off considerably. So it is more reasonable to treat mosquito repellent plants as a supplementary measure, and during peak mosquito season you still need to combine them with window screens, mosquito nets and other measures.

As for care, mosquito repellent plants like a warm environment with plenty of light. They can usually be placed on a balcony or by a window, and the potting soil just needs to be kept slightly moist, since overwatering easily causes root rot. Pinching back the tips appropriately during the growing season makes the plant fuller, and the more leaves there are, the stronger the fragrance. In the high heat of summer, pay attention to ventilation to avoid stuffy, damp conditions that can bring on disease.

To help it work better, you can gently rub or shake the leaves to release the fragrance fully, then place the pot at doorways, windowsills and other spots where mosquitoes easily enter. One thing to note is that a few people or pets may feel unwell after smelling a strong fragrance for a long time, so it is better not to place too many indoors and to keep the air circulating.
