Detailed Guide to Propagating Umbrella Plant by Cuttings, Easy to Learn and Do

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
It is a plant that can grow in water or in soil, and it also produces umbrella-like flowers that are very beautiful and charming, making it a great material for flower arrangements. If you want to grow it too, come and take a closer look with us at how to propagate it by cuttings.

1. Timing

The timing of cuttings is very important. Generally speaking, we need to avoid the flowering period. If the plant we want to propagate produces flowers, we need to carefully check exactly when it blooms. As mentioned earlier, it does flower, and the time is at the transition between summer and autumn, so we cannot do it during this period.

Considering temperature and other conditions, the best time for us to do this is in June or July.

2. Soil cuttings

There are two ways to propagate it by cuttings, one of which is soil cuttings. As the name suggests, this means doing it in soil.

The part we need to select is the stem with bracts. Perhaps some people are not clear about this, but in plain terms it is the topmost part of the most robust branch before flowering, or more precisely, the top 3 cm to 5 cm long section of this part.

Cut off part of its whorled leaves, because this can reduce water evaporation. Then what we need to do is insert it into the soil. There is something particular about this soil: we need to mix some sand and gravel into it.

After that, place it in a shady spot, water it thoroughly, and it is best to keep it constantly moist. It takes about more than 20 days for it to grow new roots.

3. Water cuttings

The second method is water cuttings, which means placing it in water for maintenance.

The water used here also has its particulars. We had best use cool boiled water, and the bottle holding this water needs to have a wide mouth. We still need to choose a stem with bracts, but we need to cut an 8 cm section of its umbrella-shaped upper part. Each bract needs half of it cut off, and then we insert it directly into the water.

We need to keep the temperature at 25°C, and the time required is 20 days. If water cuttings are done in summer, then the water needs to be changed every two or three days. This can resist bacteria, so its roots will not rot because of it.
