The flower language of the begonia is a profound symbol of bitter love and longing
The begonia (Begonia) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the family Begoniaceae, with fresh, glossy green leaves and small, exquisite flowers that mostly bloom in summer and autumn, making it a common ornamental flower on balconies and in courtyards. In Chinese folk tradition it is also called the longing grass or heartbreak flower, and since ancient times it has been closely linked with the feeling of missing someone. The begonia family has a great many cultivars, each with its own characteristics, such as the wax begonia, the cane begonia, the rex begonia and the star begonia.
The flower language of the begonia mainly conveys bitter love, longing and sincere, deep affection. A folk legend tells of a woman who missed her far-traveling lover day and night, and whose tears fell on the soil and turned into delicate flowers, so people called it the heartbreak flower, using it to describe unforgettable longing and sorrowful love. It is precisely because of this reticence that the begonia is often regarded as a flower that carries unspoken feelings.
Begonias of different colors differ slightly in meaning: the red series represents passionate and persistent love, the pink series leans toward a gentle and delicate affection, while the white series symbolizes purity and sincerity. When interpreting them, you can adapt flexibly according to the occasion of the gift and need not stick rigidly to fixed sayings. It carries both emotional meaning and good ornamental value, and is suitable for growing in pots on windowsills and desks to add a touch of elegance to the home.
In daily care, the begonia prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment; it dislikes direct strong light and waterlogged pots, and will grow well if the soil is kept slightly moist and the air circulation is good. Removing spent flowers and old leaves promptly during the growing season can make the plant fuller and the flowering more lasting. Once you understand its flower language, growing a pot of begonias will add a touch of sentiment to your flower viewing.
