A hedge is a ribbon-like plant barrier formed by densely planting shrubs or small trees in rows and then pruning and shaping them. It is often used to enclose courtyards, divide spaces, guide routes, or replace walls. It not only provides protection and screening but also beautifies the environment, making it a widely used planting form in courtyard landscaping and municipal scenic design.

By height, hedges can be divided into tall hedges, medium hedges, and low hedges. Tall hedges are mostly used to block sight lines and wind, while low hedges are often used for edging or dividing flower borders. By ornamental characteristics, they can also be divided into evergreen hedges, flowering hedges, fruiting hedges, and thorny hedges, such as evergreen hedges made with Chinese juniper and glossy privet, flowering hedges made with Chinese rose and azalea, and fruiting or thorny hedges made with firethorn and Chinese holly.

Plants suitable for hedges generally need strong sprouting ability, tolerance to pruning, fine and dense branches and leaves, and good adaptability. Common ones include Japanese euonymus, boxwood, golden-leaf privet, red photinia, pittosporum, Chinese arborvitae, and sweet viburnum. In southern regions, orange jasmine and Fukien tea are also commonly used. When choosing, local climate and light conditions should be taken into account.

In terms of care, the most important thing is regular pruning, mostly carried out during the growing season. Through tip cutting, lateral branches are encouraged to sprout, making the hedge body dense and neat and preventing it from becoming thick at the top and bare at the bottom. At the same time, water and fertilizer management and pest and disease control should be done well. Aphids, scale insects, and powdery mildew are relatively common, and they should be dealt with promptly once found so the hedge can remain beautiful for a long time.
