The golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) is a succulent in the cactus family, genus Echinocactus, native to the arid desert regions of Mexico. Its body is round and plump, emerald green, covered with neatly arranged ribs, and on the ribs grow hard golden-yellow spines; at the top there is also a ring of golden-yellow woolly hairs. Overall it looks striking and spirited, and it is a very classic large variety in the cactus family.

The golden barrel cactus is characterized by slow growth but a very long lifespan; the body gradually grows larger with the years, and the number of ribs also gradually increases. In its place of origin, wild plants can grow quite large, while potted plants at home are usually smaller in size due to the limits of the pot and care conditions. Adult plants cared for over many years may bloom with yellow flowers in summer, the flowers emerging from the woolly hairs at the top, with high ornamental value.

As for care, the golden barrel cactus likes a sunny, warm and dry environment, and is best placed on a south-facing balcony or windowsill so it can get plenty of sun. The soil should be loose, airy and well-draining; sandy soil mixed with granular soil can be used for planting. Water according to the principle of watering thoroughly only after the soil has dried out; give a moderate amount of water during the spring and autumn growing seasons, while in midsummer and deep winter watering should be controlled. In winter, pay attention to keeping it warm and avoid frost and prolonged low temperatures.

In daily care, the most common problems with the golden barrel cactus are root and body rot caused by overwatering, and leggy, deformed growth of the body caused by insufficient light. Usually observe the condition of the body more often; if it is found to be soft or yellowing, check whether the potting soil is too wet. The golden barrel cactus has a neat shape and stays evergreen all year round; it looks great placed on a balcony, in a living room or in an office, and it is easy to look after, making it very suitable for beginners to start growing plants.
