Asteraceae is one of the families with the greatest number of species among the angiosperms, found almost everywhere in the world. The vast majority of its members are herbaceous plants, with a small number of shrubs and subshrubs as well. The chrysanthemum, sunflower, dandelion, daisy, lettuce and others we are familiar with are all members of this large family.

The most typical feature of Asteraceae is the capitulum, or flower head. What looks like a single complete large flower is actually made up of many small florets densely arranged on a flat receptacle. The florets are usually divided into two types: ray florets and disc florets. The outer ray florets resemble petals and often serve to attract insects, while the central disc florets are responsible for producing seeds. The fruit is an achene, and many species bear a pappus, which facilitates wind dispersal - this is also why dandelion seeds can drift so far on the wind.

In terms of uses, Asteraceae is closely tied to people's daily lives. Ornamental types include chrysanthemum, Gerbera, dahlia, marigold and Calendula, among others; with their rich colors and long blooming periods, they are regulars in flower beds and courtyards. Edible types include lettuce, leafy lettuce and Jerusalem artichoke. Dandelion, mugwort and Atractylodes macrocephala are often used as medicinal raw materials. The sunflower is also an important oil crop.

Most Asteraceae plants are highly adaptable, preferring sunny conditions and well-drained environments, and they reproduce in diverse ways - sowing, cuttings and division all work. It is worth noting that the pollen of a few Asteraceae plants, such as common ragweed, easily triggers allergies, so care should be taken to identify them when encountering them in the wild. Overall, Asteraceae offers ornamental, edible and medicinal value all at once, making it an important plant group worth getting to know.
