Dragon Fruit Planting Methods and Key Points for Daily Care
Dragon fruit is a climbing fruit tree in the cactus family (Cactaceae). Its flesh comes in types such as red-fleshed and white-fleshed, and the fruit is rich in nutrients. It can be eaten and also has some ornamental value, making it suitable for growing in courtyards, on terraces, or in greenhouses. It likes warmth and tolerates drought, but fears cold and waterlogging. Understanding its growth habits before planting makes it easier to grow a good harvest.
Dragon fruit is mostly propagated by cuttings or grafting. Select robust growing branches, cut them into small sections, and leave them in a cool, ventilated place until the wounds dry, then insert them into loose, breathable, well-drained sandy soil. Keep the soil slightly moist, and they will soon take root and sprout. Grafting is often used for the rapid propagation of superior varieties, with a relatively high survival rate.
In terms of daily care, dragon fruit likes an environment with plenty of light, and a relatively long daily light period should be ensured; insufficient light will affect flowering and fruiting. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, and never let potted soil or garden soil remain waterlogged for a long time, to avoid root rot. During the peak growing season, apply decomposed organic fertilizer as a top dressing as appropriate. Flowering and fruiting consume a lot of nutrients, so attention should be paid to supplementing with fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium.
Dragon fruit stems and vines grow vigorously, so supports need to be set up to guide them to climb, and overly dense or weak branches should be pruned appropriately to improve ventilation and light penetration. When winter temperatures are low, protect against the cold; you can cover for insulation or move the plants to a warm place for care. In addition, during the growing process, watch out for common pests such as aphids, promptly clean up diseased and weak branches and leaves, and keep the environment tidy. Only then can dragon fruit grow vigorously and bear fruit smoothly.
