Detailed Guide to the Cultivation Methods and Precautions for Haworthia

1. Soil

Since this plant likes relatively fertile, sandy soil with good air permeability, you should choose somewhat small, shallow-rimmed flower pots, and the substrate can be prepared by mixing sand and peat ash in a 2:1 ratio.

2. Water

Because this plant is very well adapted to environments with scarce water, and its leaves are very thick and fleshy, which allows it to store a great deal of water, when cultivating it we must be careful about the amount of water added; under normal circumstances, there is no need to water too frequently. Generally, during the season when this plant grows most vigorously, watering twice a week is enough, and each time the amount of water poured should roughly just moisten the soil in the pot, with no standing water allowed. Moreover, during its non-growing season, it needs even less water, and watering once a month is sufficient.

3. Light

Because this plant prefers to grow in relatively shady places, and it is quite sensitive to light, it cannot tolerate strong light, otherwise it will cause poor development of the plant.

4. Fertilizer

This plant grows most vigorously in spring and autumn, so at these times there must be enough nutrients for it to absorb; we can apply some fertilizer appropriately, at a frequency of about once a month. But when applying fertilizer you must be careful, and absolutely do not splash the fertilizer water onto the leaves, otherwise it will damage the leaves and then yellow spots will appear.

5. Temperature

The temperature most suitable for its growth is roughly between 20 and 25 degrees, so in the hot summer it will go dormant or semi-dormant; at this time, we can place it in a relatively shady spot, and both the amount and frequency of watering should be reduced, which can prevent high temperatures combined with standing water from damaging the roots. In the cold winter, we had best keep the ambient temperature above 10°C, and it is best to place the plant under relatively soft light.

6. Points to Note

1. The amount and frequency of watering should be determined according to seasonal changes.

2. It cannot tolerate strong light.

3. Do not let fertilizer touch the leaves.
