Kalanchoe 'Magic Lantern' Looks Like Tiny Lanterns - Master These Care Tips for Even Fuller Blooms
Kalanchoe 'Magic Lantern', also known as the Magic Lantern kalanchoe or red lantern plant, is a perennial succulent in the Crassulaceae family, genus Kalanchoe. Its leaves are thick and juicy with slightly serrated edges, and when it blooms, the flowers hang downward, shaped like tiny lanterns, mostly bright red or orange-red, hanging in clusters along the stems with strong ornamental appeal.
Its natural blooming period is mostly concentrated in winter and spring, right when Lunar New Year flowers are popular, so it is often grown as a potted plant on balconies, windowsills or bright indoor spots. Because of its compact growth habit and tolerance for drought and easy care, it is also very suitable for beginners and is one of the common flowering succulents in home gardening.
For care, Kalanchoe 'Magic Lantern' likes a warm, dry environment with plenty of sunlight, and above all fears waterlogged potting soil. Watering should follow the principle of watering only after the soil dries out; during the vigorous growth periods of spring and autumn, water and fertilizer can be supplemented appropriately; in the high heat of summer, provide shade and ventilation and reduce watering; in winter, move it indoors to keep warm and keep the potting soil on the dry side for greater safety.
Propagation is mainly by cuttings: cut healthy stems, let the wounds dry, then insert them into slightly moist sandy soil and keep them in a warm, indirectly lit environment, and they will quickly take root and survive. In daily care, if light is insufficient, the plant tends to grow leggy and produce fewer flowers; if watered too much, it easily suffers root rot. Keep light and moisture well controlled, and Kalanchoe 'Magic Lantern' will grow vigorously and produce branches full of tiny lanterns year after year.
