How do you grow a Kalanchoe (kalanchoe blossfeldiana) to extend its flowering period?
1. Potting soil
First, the pot it is planted in should not be too large. Many people think that the larger the pot, the more room it has to grow, and the better it will grow. But this is not the case, because with a lot of space, the roots will spread everywhere, and many fibrous roots will consume a large amount of nutrients, so its flowers will become fewer and smaller, and the flowering period will be shortened. It is best that its plant shape is not too tall either. Summer is its dormant period, and winter is the best time for its growth, so before autumn arrives you should prune it heavily to make it shorter, which allows its branches to develop. Then, with fertilizer, its growth will improve, and the more branches it has, the more flowers it will produce.
2. Do not fertilize too concentratedly
Fertilizer and water are the way to promote denser branches and leaves, but it must not be excessive. Too much of anything is as bad as too little. If you fertilize heavily, it will become weak and unable to absorb nutrients, and then many yellow leaves will appear, looking completely listless, which affects its ornamental effect. As long as you add some fertilizer when it is flowering and when it is budding, you can make it grow more flowers and bloom longer.
3. Appropriate light exposure
It likes sunlight and can tolerate partial shade. It fears extreme heat in summer and severe cold in winter. Apart from needing shade at noon during the dog days of summer, it should be given light at all other times. With at least 4 hours of direct sunlight every day, it will grow robustly. If it receives more than 8 hours of light, its leaves and branches will grow very compactly, allowing it to store more energy and extend its flowering time.
4. Appropriate watering
You should control its water moderately. It is a succulent flower with a lot of moisture in its body, so it is relatively able to tolerate drought, but it fears waterlogging. If the floor is relatively high and the air is relatively dry, it will grow better. In spring and autumn, water it once every three days, and water it thoroughly. In summer, water it a little less, once every 5 to 7 days is fine. If you put it outdoors, be careful to shelter it from rain, because too much water can easily cause leaf drop. Only with moderate water control is it possible to extend the flowering period.
