Botanically speaking, pineapple and brome pineapple are actually the same species, both tropical fruits of the genus Ananas in the family Bromeliaceae; only the names and cultivated varieties differ. It is generally believed that "pineapple" is the customary name used in mainland China, while "brome pineapple" is the common name used in Taiwan, China; later, the market gradually came to use "brome pineapple" to refer to some newer varieties of better quality.

In terms of appearance, what the market usually calls pineapple has leaves with serrated edges, and the inner spines on the rind are deeper, requiring special removal; brome pineapple has relatively smooth leaves and shallower fruit eyes, so after peeling it can be cut directly into chunks. In terms of taste, brome pineapple is generally sweeter, less sour, and has less fibrous flesh; pineapple is more noticeably sour and somewhat more fibrous.

Whether called brome pineapple or pineapple, the flesh contains bromelain, and some people feel numbness and stinging in the mouth and tongue after eating it. By habit, pineapple is cut into chunks and soaked briefly in lightly salted water before eating to reduce the irritation; brome pineapple varieties are less irritating, but it is still advisable to eat them in moderation and avoid eating a large amount on an empty stomach.

In addition, plants in the family Bromeliaceae are rich in variety; besides the pineapple cultivated as a fruit, there are also ornamental varieties such as Cryptanthus and air plants, which are very suitable for home care. Do not rush to throw away the pineapple peel after eating it either; after composting it can become a nutrient-rich fertilizer, and when used to water flowering and foliage plants they grow better, and if handled properly it basically has no odor.
