Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant, also known as ribbon plant or airplane plant. It is native to South Africa and is now widely cultivated around the world. Its leaves are slender and linear, growing in clumps from the base, and the runners it sends out produce small plantlets with aerial roots that hang down naturally, giving it a light, graceful appearance and making it highly ornamental.

Common cultivated varieties include the variegated spider plant with golden edges, the one with silver edges, the one with a golden center and the one with a silver center, which differ mainly in the yellow-white stripes along the leaf margins or centers. Among them, the golden-edged and silver-edged spider plants have fresh, clean leaf colors and clearly defined layers, making them the most popular varieties for home growing.

Spider plants prefer a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment and dislike harsh direct sunlight. They are best placed by a window with plenty of indirect light or in a bright spot indoors. Water when the soil is dry and let it dry out between waterings to avoid root rot caused by long-term waterlogging of the potting soil, and a dilute liquid fertilizer can be added appropriately during the vigorous growth period. They can be grown in soil or in water; when grown hydroponically, change the water regularly to keep it clean.

During routine care, if the leaves turn yellow, it is usually related to excessive light, overwatering or insufficient nutrients, and adjusting the care routine promptly will allow the plant to gradually recover. The small plantlets on the runners can be cut off and rooted in water, or planted directly into a new pot, making propagation very simple. With its trailing form and strong adaptability, the spider plant is suitable for hanging on balconies, in living rooms and other places, and is a very popular indoor foliage plant.
