Ice Ling Flower is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Adonis in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), with its formal name usually written as Amur adonis (Adonis amurensis). In Northeast China it is also called binglianghua, dingbinghua, and binglihua. It blooms every year in early spring, often breaking through the soil while snow and ice fragments still remain, and its small golden flowers stand out strikingly against the snow, which is how it got the name Ice Ling Flower; many people also call it the snow lotus of the forest sea.

The Ice Ling Flower plant is not tall, generally around ten to thirty centimeters, with leaves finely divided into feathery segments, and flowers borne singly at the top of the stem, with golden petals that spread open in sunlight and close on cloudy days. Its cold tolerance is extremely strong, and it is one of the earliest-blooming wild flowers in the north, commonly found under the forest canopy, at forest edges, and in moist soil rich in humus in the forest regions of Northeast China.

To grow Ice Ling Flower at home, try to imitate its native cool environment as much as possible, choosing semi-shade, moist, well-drained fertile soil, and paying attention to shading and cooling during high summer temperatures. Propagation is mainly by seed; the seeds have a dormant characteristic, so before sowing they need low-temperature sand stratification, and division can also be done in autumn when repotting. It should be noted that the Ice Ling Flower grows slowly, and from sowing to flowering often takes several years, so you need patience when caring for it and should not transplant it frequently.

The Ice Ling Flower has outstanding ornamental value; its early-spring blooming exactly fills the gap in the northern flowering season, and it is also often used to symbolize the tough character of not fearing severe cold. But special attention should be paid to the fact that the whole plant contains cardiac glycosides and is somewhat toxic, so it is for viewing only, must never be eaten by mistake, and it is also not advisable to dig up wild plants at will.
