Do you know the new edamame variety Golden Taro Edamame Tainan Select No. 1? This soybean variety is different from other soybeans, and also different from hyacinth bean cultivation. Let's take a look!

Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 was bred by the Tainan District Agricultural Improvement Station in cooperation with the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center. The new variety has excellent quality and a taro-like aroma; not only the fresh pods but also the plant leaves give off a taro fragrance, fresh and fragrant to smell, sweet and delicious to eat. The fresh beans are rich in nutrients, and the processed frozen edamame products have been tasted and rated as top-grade by scholars and experts at home and abroad. This variety passed the naming review committee of the Council of Agriculture, and its commercial name is "Golden Taro"; it is the first tea-bean-type edamame variety in the country approved for registration and promotion.

Golden Taro Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 was bred using the pure-line breeding method. In the spring crop of 1996, from a contract-production field of 30 hectares of tea-bean-type edamame varieties belonging to Xinshi soybean farmers, 182 individual plants were selected according to different plant types. In the autumn crop of 1996, they were sown in a plant-row manner; during the growing period, inferior plants were eliminated and superior ones retained, and at the green pod harvest stage, 35 lines with good pod-setting traits, high qualified pod yield and uniform maturity were selected. In the spring crop of 1997, a two-row trial was set up at the Tainan main station to continue selection, and 9 lines with high qualified pod yield were selected. In the autumn crop of 1997, propagation was carried out and line NO.46 was evaluated and selected, numbered TS85-21V (Tainan Select No. 1). From 1998 it participated in line trials, in 1999 and 2000 in regional trials and a series of cultivation method trials, and in 2003 Professor Lin Shun-fu of the Department of Agronomy at National Taiwan University was commissioned to conduct DNA fingerprint analysis. Tainan Select No. 1 and other superior individual plants selected from Xinshi farmland belong to the same population, with a similarity of 80%, while Tainan Select No. 1 has about 30-32% divergence from the tea-bean-type edamame currently preserved in Taiwan, China.

Advantages of the new variety
1. Good eating taste and mouthfeel: At the 2000 China-Japan Frozen Edamame Trade Symposium hosted by the Taiwan, China Fruit and Vegetable Freezing Industry Association, based on the evaluation results of 34 domestic and foreign industry participants, the flavor of Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 was widely praised, showing that the special flavor of Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 - the taro aroma - is loved by many.

2. Qualified pod yield is higher than that of currently cultivated tea-bean-type edamame varieties: When Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 is planted at the general edamame cultivation density of 50 cm × 15 cm × 2 plants, its qualified pod yield is slightly lower than that of the currently cultivated edamame varieties Kaohsiung Select No. 1 and Kaohsiung No. 5, but higher than that of the currently cultivated tea-bean-type varieties (Xiangji, Japanese Aji Taro, etc.). If the cultivation density of Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 is increased to 50 cm * 10 cm * 2 plants, the increase in yield is no less than that of the currently cultivated variety Kaohsiung No. 5.

3. Tolerance to pests and diseases: Under conditions without inoculation with pathogens and without pesticide application, the incidence of downy mildew and powdery mildew in Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 is less than 1%, showing strong disease tolerance.

4. High content of sugars and isoflavones: Based on the average quality component analysis of two years of regional trials, Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 contains 13.7% sugar in the autumn crop and 13.5% in the spring crop, both higher than the control variety Kaohsiung Select No. 1. The total isoflavone content of Edamame Tainan Select No. 1 seeds is 548.9 μg/g, an increase of 52.7% over the control variety Kaohsiung No. 5, giving it better value as a health food.
