Key management points for early-flowering mango trees

Because of the long winter drought, or because the temperature is on the high side, mango trees are very prone to sending out flower panicles early before the Start of Spring, leading to early flowering, and then around Qingming they are highly vulnerable to the threat of low ground temperatures and rainy days, which seriously affects pollination and fertilization, reduces the fruit-setting rate, and causes a reduction in yield. So how should early-flowering mango trees be managed? Follow the editor to learn more about it.

1. Remove flower panicles

Mango flower panicles have a strong ability to regrow. If removed promptly after they emerge, they will generally emerge again in 7-10 days, and they will have more branches, shorter panicles, more female flowers, and later flowering, making fruit set easier. So after mango sends out flower panicles in January-February, when the panicles have grown to about 5-10 cm, remove them promptly from the base, to encourage the tree to send out more short, clustered panicles with many female flowers, while also delaying flowering, which is beneficial for the later yield.

2. Fertilize and earth up

After removing the flower panicles, fertilize promptly to provide sufficient nutrients for the tree to send out flower panicles. At this time, fertilization should be based mainly on organic fertilizer and high-efficiency phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Generally, for trees more than ten years old, apply 25-30 kg of decomposed farmyard manure, 3-4 kg of superphosphate, and 1-2 kg of potassium chloride or potassium sulfate per tree. It can be applied by the ring trench method: mix all the fertilizers thoroughly and evenly, apply them into the ring trench, then cover with soil. At the same time, drench each tree with about 80 kg of clear water or decomposed mature human and livestock manure water, to promote the dissolution and transformation of the fertilizer and improve fertilizer use efficiency. After fertilizing, earth up with garbage fertilizer, pond mud, burned soil, or other miscellaneous soil fertilizers, and at the same time cover the tree disk with rice straw or other weeds, which can stabilize and raise the soil temperature and promote panicle development.

3. Prevent and control pests and diseases

For early-flowering mango trees, pests and diseases occur especially early, so prevention and control must also be early to protect the flower panicles. After removing the flower panicles, it is necessary every 10-15 days to spray once inside and outside the canopy with a mixed solution of Anlubao and Shibaoke, or a mixed solution of Dijiang and Shibaogong, spraying continuously 2-3 times, evenly spraying all leaves, until water droplets on the leaves are about to drip down.

4. Spray foliar fertilizer

After removing the flower panicles, it is necessary to spray foliar fertilizer once every 7-10 days. You can use a mixed solution of 0.2% urea, 0.3% monopotassium phosphate, and 1500 times Shennongsu chelated fertilizer, or a mixed solution of 0.2% urea, 500 times high-efficiency biological phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and 1000 times Zhuangfengyou, spraying continuously 3-5 times. This can promote robust flower panicle growth, improve flower quality, and help increase the flowering and fruit-setting rate.
