Winter freeze protection measures for kiwifruit

As winter temperatures keep dropping, kiwifruit growers enter another busy period of pruning and irrigation, but the most important task is freeze protection. Only by doing good freeze protection work in winter can frost damage be effectively reduced and the yield and quality of the coming year be guaranteed. So how should kiwifruit be protected from freezing in winter? Let's take a look together.

1. Clear snow

As temperatures drop, many regions experience snowfall, and after snow falls, the snow on kiwifruit branches and under the trellis surface must be cleared promptly. If it is not cleared in time, it will damage the branches and buds of the kiwifruit and affect sprouting the following year. After clearing the snow from the trellis surface and the lower part of the roots and stems, the roots also need to be hilled with soil. Hilling the roots with soil can raise the root zone soil temperature by 1-2 degrees and prevent the roots from freezing, making it an important freeze protection measure for kiwifruit.

2. Wrap for warmth

After clearing the snow, the next step is to warm the tree body. Corn stalks can be used to wrap the plants. If there are no corn stalks, unused cotton clothing from home or other materials with good breathability and insulating properties can also be used for wrapping, and the wrapping height should be greater than one meter, which can also provide excellent freeze protection. If there is continuous low-temperature snowy weather, a treatment of Kuifuling + Wofengsu + brown sugar + silicone can be applied to coat the trees.

3. Brushing treatment for trees

A biological fungicidal coating agent + plant nutrients + brown sugar + silicone can be used to brush the tree trunks, combined with a spray of biological fungicidal coating agent + plant nutrients + brown sugar + silicone + potassium sulfate + calcium nitrate. For plants that are highly prone to frost damage, brush them heavily 2-3 times. The first time can repair wounds, the second time can eliminate hidden pathogens, and the third time can add nutrients and enhance the plant's cold resistance. In addition, while enhancing tree nutrition, sugar substances can also increase the content of soluble sugars in tree cells, thereby lowering the freezing point of the tree body and making the plants more tolerant of low temperatures.

4. Pruning

In winter, choose weather when the temperature is not too low to prune the branches of the plants, or prune on clear days. About half of the branches can be pruned during the growing season, with no need to prune them all at once in winter. Winter is the dormant period of kiwifruit, and pruning branches at this time is less manageable than pruning during the growing season, because kiwifruit stops growing in winter, and after pruning the wounds do not heal for a long time, making them highly prone to frost damage and also causing canker disease.
