How to prune jujube trees correctly in winter
Jujube is a fruit that we all enjoy eating very much, and it is basically grown in all parts of our country. When growing jujube trees, we must do a good job of pruning as the seasons change. Among these, winter pruning is very important, as it directly affects the jujube tree's flowering, fruiting and other production performance in the second year. So how should jujube trees be pruned in winter? Below, the editor brings you three tips for winter pruning of jujube trees. Let's take a look!

1. Heading back
When pruning jujube trees in winter, we can first carry out heading back. Cut off the thin and weak secondary branches that grew later on the jujube tree, then keep the robustly growing secondary branches in the middle to enhance the jujube tree's production capacity. For auxiliary nurturing branches, follow the principle of leaving them to grow first and then cutting back, to encourage fruiting as soon as possible. Then we must also pay attention to tip-cutting and heading back, that is, when heading back the leader of the jujube tree. Cut out the first secondary branch below the cut, to encourage the main bud below the cut to sprout. This promotes the growth of the main and lateral branches and increases the fruiting area and the growth capacity of the main and lateral branches of the jujube tree in the second year.
2. Retrenchment
Then we must also do a good job of retrenchment pruning, widening the branch angle to ensure tree vigor balance. When retrenching, we can do it during the jujube tree's fruiting period. At the base of all main trunk branches, choose and keep two robust secondary branches growing in different directions, select and keep one bud eye on each, and then cut off the excess. But this must not affect the direction in which the main trunk branch extends forward. After the jujube tree sprouts in spring, the retained bud eyes will produce new branches. When the new branches grow to about 75 cm, pinch off the tips, then do a good job of branch bending to maintain the growth of the new branches.
After leaf fall, saw off the main trunk that extends forward, and the sawing position should be at the new branch. Doing this will not have a great impact on the jujube tree's yield that year. Then we can also shape the jujube tree according to the open-center method and adjust the jujube tree's framework. Select and keep secondary branches with appropriate growth direction and suitable angle. When retrenching, keep about two bud eyes to encourage new buds to sprout in spring. Then, when 7-8 secondary branches have grown, pinch off the tips and bend the branches.
3. Thinning branches
Thinning branches is also a pruning task that must be done well during winter pruning of jujube trees. The crowns of many jujube trees are rather closed, and the branches grow densely, resulting in extremely poor ventilation inside the crown and insufficient light. This not only leads to reduced yield, but fruit quality is also greatly affected. Moreover, when carrying out management work such as spraying and disinfection, it is also very inconvenient. So when pruning in winter, we must pay attention to thinning out crossing and overlapping branches, thin and weak branches, overly long and overly dense branches, and all branches with no use value that affect permeability.
The above is a brief introduction to how to prune jujube trees in winter. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and I hope it can help everyone!
