How to Grow Huyou Pomelo? A Detailed Guide to Planting Techniques and Management Methods
There are quite a few varieties of pomelo, and Huyou is one of them. The most famous one is Changshan Huyou. It is rich in multiple vitamins, the 16 amino acids the human body needs, and various trace elements. It has high nutritional value, and its flesh is plump, crisp, tender and juicy. It also has the effects of cooling the body and reducing internal heat, and of relieving cough and reducing phlegm. So how should Huyou be grown? Let's take a look together.

1. Site Selection and Afforestation
Huyou is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree with the characteristics of tolerance to poor soil and cold. It grows vigorously and is easy to manage, and it is not strict about soil requirements. Generally, mountainous land or basin bottoms with convenient transportation and good drainage can be chosen for afforestation and planting. Before planting, carry out land preparation and apply base fertilizer at the same time. Generally, 3000-5000 kg of farmyard manure is applied per mu, and then the planting holes are dug.
2. Planting
Huyou grows vigorously and has a large canopy. Grafted trees generally enter the full fruiting period in 6-7 years, so the planting density should not be too high. Generally, 35-45 plants are planted per mu. It is usually done in March in spring or in November, and planting in early to mid-March is relatively better. It should be done on a cloudy day or in the evening of a sunny day, and it is not suitable to plant on rainy days or when the soil is too wet. In addition, it should be noted that Huyou has the ability of parthenocarpy and can produce seedless fruit without pollination, but cross-pollination gives a higher fruit-setting rate and larger fruit, so an appropriate number of pollinator trees should be arranged.
3. Shaping and Pruning
When the trunk of a young tree grows to about 0.5 m, the trunk should be headed. For young trees, cultivate the main branches and select and retain the secondary main branches, and at the same time promptly remove flower buds to reduce the consumption of tree nutrients. Control the plant height at 1.5-15 m of support so that the canopy is compact and the tree shape is open. After that, cultivate the main branches and the extended shoots of the secondary main branches so that the branches are evenly distributed, ventilated and air-permeable, and grow robustly. During the full fruiting period, auxiliary pruning work should be carried out, such as removing buds to control shoots, pinching, and cutting off excessive vegetative branches, dead branches, and diseased and pest-infested branches.
4. Pest and Disease Control
Huyou rarely suffers from pests and diseases. Generally, in July-August, scale insects harm the fruit and leaves, and from May to September, mites, aphids, and boring insects harm the branches and leaves. Control should focus on prevention. In late March, dimethoate can be used to control scale insects, spraying once every 7-10 days for 3 consecutive times; in April, dimethoate and fenvalerate can be used to control mites, aphids, boring insects, etc.
