Peach Tree Summer Pruning Techniques

Summer is a period of vigorous growth for fruit trees, and peaches are a fruit in high demand in the market, so peach cultivation is favored by many fruit growers. In peach cultivation and management, pruning is relatively important, especially summer pruning; improper pruning can very likely cause a vicious cycle. So how should peach trees be pruned in summer? Let's take a look.

1. Bud removal

Bud removal means removing excess buds from the peach tree. Generally speaking, the main method is to promptly remove or cut off the sprouts on the trunk, the shaping zone of the main branches, and around 15 cm at the base of the main branches, as well as the tender buds and tender shoots that grow alongside and overlap with the main branches, to save the plant's nutrient consumption and promote good flower bud differentiation.

2. Pinching

The purpose of pinching is to control the growth of the peach tree and create good conditions for the growth of peach branches. When pinching, it is recommended to leave about 20 cm; if the length is too short, it can easily stimulate a large number of shoots from the lower buds, causing excessive vegetative growth and excessive nutrient consumption, which is unfavorable for fruit growth and development. If it is less than 30 cm, there is no need to pinch, and you only need to remove the tender shoot at the front to temporarily stop its forward extension.

3. Shoot pruning

The principle of shoot pruning is similar to pinching; you need to leave a certain length and cut back. For new shoots that are too densely growing or have not been pinched in time, prune to leave a length of about 30 cm, so as to inhibit forced growth, promote the growth of weak branches, enrich the inner canopy, and balance tree vigor.

4. Branch bending

When bending branches, do not use too much force, otherwise the branch may break or the bark may be torn, giving pathogens an opportunity to invade. When bending a branch, use your left hand to hold the lower part and your right hand to grip the upper part and knead gently. After the xylem becomes supple, bend the upper end into an empty space so that it becomes flat and slanting or bends downward. The operating position is generally about 10-15 cm from the base of the new shoot.

5. Spraying growth regulators

In May-June and September, spray 200-300 times diluted paclobutrazol growth regulator solution on overly vigorous fruiting trees. Do not water within one week after spraying. This can not only control excessive vigor, promote flower bud growth, but also promote fruit growth and development and prevent fruit cracking.
