Fertilization techniques for yacon

Yacon is also called jicama, because it has a swollen fleshy root like a tuber. And because the root contains a lot of water and sugar, it is now often eaten as a fruit, which has greatly increased its value. There are many issues to pay attention to when growing yacon, but fertilization is very important and is the best way to promote fruiting, so here is a brief introduction to its fertilization methods.

I. Fertilizer requirements

What yacon mainly harvests is the fleshy root, so the nutrients are mainly supplied to the root, and the other part is to maintain the vegetative growth of the aboveground leaves and stems. The root needs a large amount of water and fertilizer. It needs to grow in deep, fertile, moist soil, and a large amount of base fertilizer can be applied to improve the soil quality and soil structure. Plastic film mulching and transplanting can be used to extend the growth period, enhance photosynthesis, and produce nutrients. In yacon, the root absorbs nutrients to supply the branches and leaves, and the leaves produce nutrients through photosynthesis to supply root growth.

II. Fertilization techniques

1. Fertilization

It is best to apply relatively mild pig manure, cow manure, or humus soil made by mixing and composting fallen leaves, straw, and soil. Do not apply poultry manure, as it is too hot and easily burns the plants, resulting in poor growth.

2. Base fertilizer

Base fertilizer is used when preparing the land before planting. While plowing, apply fertilizer generally, and finally mix it with the soil and then cover with about 5 cm of fine soil. This prevents root damage. Its root system is not well developed and is mainly distributed in the 30 cm deep soil. Base fertilizer should be applied at the bottom of the 30 cm layer. For better absorption, some humus soil should be placed on top of the base fertilizer, which is beneficial for absorption.

3. Seedling-promoting fertilizer

Yacon is planted with tubers. After planting and before root growth, the nutrients for growth are all provided by the tuber, but the tuber's nutrients are limited, so some light fertilizer water needs to be applied as a top dressing to promote growth and keep the soil moist. The concentration must be low, otherwise it is easy to damage the roots.

4. Fruit-swelling fertilizer

After the planted crop passes the seedling stage, the main task is root growth, so top dressing can be applied two to three times throughout the entire fruit growth period. The interval each time is one to two months, and about 200 jin per mu is applied each time. One week after each fertilization, irrigation should be done once. This is beneficial for fertilizer absorption.

When growing yacon, fertilization should be carried out according to its fertilizer requirements and at different stages throughout the entire growth period. The amount and timing of application should be specifically determined according to soil conditions and growth conditions. The above content can serve as a reference for everyone to understand and follow.
