How to Improve the Fruit-Setting Rate of Kyoho Grapes

Kyoho grape is a European-American hybrid variety with extremely strong adaptability and disease resistance. It is currently one of the main grape cultivars, with a relatively wide planting area around the world. However, many fruit growers report that its fruit-setting rate is low when growing it. So how can the fruit-setting rate of Kyoho grapes be improved? Let's find out together.

I. Reasons Affecting the Fruit-Setting Rate of Kyoho Grapes

There are quite a few reasons affecting the fruit-setting rate of Kyoho grapes. The first is temperature. The suitable temperature during the flowering period of Kyoho grapes is 26-30 degrees. If it stays above 30 degrees for a long time, it will cause continuous and severe flower drop, leading to a lower fruit-setting rate. In addition, excessive tree vigor can also affect its fruit-setting rate. The more vigorous the tree vigor, the more severe the flower drop. Moreover, branches and shoots that are too dense can also make it prone to fruit drop. Pruning shoots after flowering can also cause fruit drop. Among diseases, gray mold and brown blight can also affect its fruit-setting rate. Soil that is too wet can also lead to severe fruit drop. There are still many other reasons causing its low fruit-setting rate.

II. How to Improve the Fruit-Setting Rate

1. Control tree vigor

For plants with excessive tree vigor, measures should be taken to control the vigor, keeping its new shoots below 70 cm, which is beneficial for fruit setting. If the new shoots reach more than 80 cm before flowering, its fruit-setting rate will be relatively low. In addition, during new shoot growth, fertilizer and water should be controlled to avoid excessive new shoot growth. After fruit setting, apply compound fertilizer and two doses of potassium sulfate as a top dressing, which can promote fruit growth and reduce fruit drop.

2. Pinching

Pinching can be carried out about one week during the flowering period, which can concentrate nutrients in the inflorescence and is beneficial for fruit setting. Attention should also be paid to the method of pinching. Generally, for weaker-growing inflorescences, leave 5-6 leaves when pinching, while for vigorous-growing inflorescences, leave 3-5 leaves when pinching.

3. Spraying mepiquat chloride

Spraying mepiquat chloride about one week during the flowering period can significantly improve the fruit-setting rate. The commonly used mepiquat chloride is a mepiquat chloride aqueous solution. Generally, each bottle of 15 mg is diluted with 15 jin of water. For vigorous growth, the concentration can be increased to one bottle diluted with 12 jin of water.

4. Control yield

Thinning flowers and fruits in grapes can reduce the plant's nutrient consumption, prevent the plant's nutritional burden from being too heavy and causing premature aging, and balance the plant's vegetative growth and reproductive growth. Controlling yield can significantly improve the fruit-setting rate and quality of grapes. Generally, the yield per mu is controlled at about 3,500 jin. It is required that each cluster of fruit retain 20-25 effective leaves. The 3-5 leaves above the fruit cluster should not retain secondary shoot leaves. Starting from the 5th leaf and above, secondary shoot leaves should be retained. Each fruit cluster should retain about 40 berries.
