How to fertilize grapes

In the process of growing grapes, fertilizing the grapes is a very important step in the planting management work. Scientific fertilization is beneficial to the growth of grape seedlings, and can also improve the yield and quality of grapes. So how do we fertilize grapes? What should we pay attention to when fertilizing? Now follow along with the editor to learn about grape fertilization techniques.

1. Fertilization patterns

Before fertilizing grapes, we must first understand the fertilizer requirements of grape growth, and then fertilize reasonably according to its fertilizer needs, so as to ensure the normal growth of the grapevines. Grapes are a fertilizer-loving plant, and their demand for fertilizer is relatively large, especially during the full fruit period. Next is their large demand for potassium fertilizer, and their demand for micro-fertilizers is also greater than that of other fruit trees. Finally, grapes' fertilizer needs also change accordingly at different growth stages, so fertilization must be reasonable according to their growth stage, and fertilizers cannot be used arbitrarily.

2. Base fertilizer

The amount of base fertilizer applied is relatively large. It is related to the growth of the grapes for a whole year and plays a major role in grape growth. Among this, the amount of base fertilizer applied reaches about 70 percent of the total annual fertilizer application, or even higher. The annual base fertilizer for grapes is generally applied after the fruit is harvested in autumn. Fertilizing during this period can promote the recovery of tree vigor, enhance cold resistance for overwintering, and also promote the sprouting and flower bud differentiation of the grapevines the following year. The base fertilizer is mainly organic fertilizer, combined with an appropriate amount of chemical fertilizer, and the total amount of fertilizer applied is about 850 kg in all. The base fertilizer is mainly applied by trenching, and care must be taken to avoid damaging the grapevine roots.

3. Topdressing

The later topdressing of grapevines is mainly divided into five stages, namely bud-promoting fertilizer, pre-flowering fertilizer, fruit-strengthening fertilizer, coloring fertilizer, and post-harvest topdressing. The types and amounts of fertilizer needed at different stages are all different. Generally, bud-promoting fertilizer is applied as topdressing in February, mainly nitrogen fertilizer, with about 20 kg per mu, and an appropriate use of 10 kg of phosphate fertilizer applied in trenches or holes. Pre-flowering fertilizer is applied at the end of April, mainly nitrogen fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer, with the amount of nitrogen fertilizer per mu controlled at 15 kg and phosphate fertilizer at about 10 kg, and it should be combined with watering. The fertilizer demand during the fruit-strengthening period is relatively large, mainly nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, with potassium fertilizer at 40 kg and nitrogen fertilizer at about 30 kg. In order to make the grapes color more evenly and improve grape quality, we also need to appropriately apply potassium fertilizer and magnesium fertilizer as topdressing. Finally, after the grapes are harvested, in order to ease tree vigor, an appropriate amount of ternary compound fertilizer of about 15 kg can be used. Of course, at this time it can also be combined with the base fertilizer for the next year.

4. Fertilization precautions

When fertilizing grapes, there are several points we need to pay special attention to. First, the base fertilizer should not be applied too shallowly, otherwise it will cause seedling death; second, fertilizer should be applied appropriately at sprouting to avoid yellowing of the leaves, but do not blindly apply topdressing or supplement iron; also, it is not that the more fertilizer the better, fertilization must be reasonable; finally, when fertilizing, it must not be too close to the trunk, and attention should be paid to watering after fertilization.

The above is the introduction to grape fertilization techniques that the editor wants to share with you today. I hope it can help friends who are just starting out in grape growing and friends who do not know how to fertilize grapes reasonably.
