Propagation methods for bayberry

Bayberry is a sweet-and-sour, juicy fruit, and it has a certain distribution range across various parts of our country. Bayberry wine, bayberry juice and preserved bayberry made from bayberry are all very popular. Therefore, bayberry now also has a certain planting area. However, how to propagate bayberry when planting it is a question many people are considering. So today, the editor has brought you the propagation methods for bayberry. Let's take a look together!

1. Layering propagation

Layering propagation is one of the most commonly used propagation methods for bayberry. It is generally carried out in spring. First, select a robustly growing, high-yielding plant as the mother plant, then choose a thick, pest- and disease-free branch as the layer. First, make about 3 longitudinal cuts on the top of the layer until reaching the xylem of the branch. Or girdle the branch by 3 cm, then press the branch into the soil, and spray an appropriate amount of rooting agent to promote rooting of the branch. After spraying, cover with 6-7 cm of fine soil, and place some heavy objects on the fine soil to prevent the layer from being blown up by the wind. Under normal management, it usually takes about two months for roots to form at the girdled site. Then, before transplanting, cut it off about 4 cm below the new roots so that it becomes a new plant, and it can be transplanted after about one year.

2. Seed propagation

Bayberry has two planting directions: edible and ornamental. When planting ornamental bayberry, seed propagation is generally the main method. First, collect seeds from robustly growing seedling trees. The kernel of the seed determines its germination rate, so when collecting seeds we must pay attention to checking the kernels of the fruit. For propagation, choose plump and mature seeds. After harvesting, soak the fruit in water for about one week until the flesh rots, wash it clean, and remove the seeds. Then select robust seeds and soak them in salt water for 1-2 weeks. Next, choose soil with sufficient fertility that is deep, loose and soft as the seedbed, and evenly broadcast the seeds on the soil. Then cover with fine soil, and they generally emerge in about four weeks. When the seedlings grow to about 9 cm, carry out thinning and apply fertilizer appropriately. After about one year, they grow into seedling trees and can be transplanted at the appropriate time.

3. Grafting propagation

Another propagation method is grafting propagation, which effectively preserves the excellent characteristics of the original variety and improves planting benefits. Grafting work is generally carried out around Qingming Festival, and the grafting method is mainly cleft grafting. Select high-yielding, strongly disease-resistant and good-quality branches as scions, and about two-year-old seedling trees as rootstocks. Keep the scion at about 13 cm, retain one node at the top and then cut off the top. And for rootstocks of about one centimeter, we should cut off the main root after grafting. Remove the top of the rootstock 2-3 weeks before grafting to avoid the rootstock's strong growth ability affecting the survival of the grafted seedling.

The above is a brief introduction to bayberry propagation methods. Because the planting directions of bayberry differ, its propagation methods also differ. Therefore, when propagating bayberry, we must choose a good propagation method according to the planting direction. That is all for today's introduction.
