Pruning Time and Methods for Waxberry

When planting waxberry, pruning is generally needed to improve the plant shape, encourage more branching, expand the canopy, increase the number of flowers and fruits, and improve yield and quality. However, pruning should not be done blindly, otherwise it will have the opposite effect. So when should you prune? How should you prune? Let's find out together.

1. Pruning Time

The general pruning time is in summer, from June to July, when large branches and vigorous branches that disrupt the tree shape are sawed off; the spring pruning time is from March to April, when small branches are pruned, mainly removing some dense branches, dead branches, and cutting back branches with excessive fruit; and the autumn pruning time is in November, when mainly some overly vigorous vegetative branches and autumn shoots are pruned.

2. Pruning Methods

The pruning methods for waxberry trees mainly include bud removal, pinching, cutting back, thinning, renewal pruning, branch bending and propping, and girdling, which cover all the pruning work for waxberry. Bud removal and pinching are mainly carried out on young trees to encourage more branching, help the canopy form early, and lay the foundation for future high yield. The rest are carried out on fruiting trees: cutting back can promote branch renewal and rejuvenation and restore tree vigor; thinning is to increase the openness of the canopy, which is beneficial for flowering and fruiting; renewal pruning is for the growth of mother branches, rejuvenating declining trees and large side branches; branch bending and propping are to expand the canopy outward and prevent inner branches from drying out and becoming bare; girdling is to promote flower bud differentiation and increase the fruit-setting rate.

3. Pruning Young Trees

Generally, the trunk is headed at 30-50 for young trees. After the spring shoots sprout, select 3-5 strong shoots to cultivate as main branches, with the rest as side branches. When the main branches grow to a certain extent, select a strong one about 50 cm from the trunk as a secondary main branch, and the second secondary main branch should be on the other side of the first secondary main branch. At the same time, side branches should also be cultivated so that the canopy forms early and lays the foundation for early fruiting.

4. Pruning During the Growing Season

Pruning during the growing season is mainly divided into spring pruning and autumn pruning. Spring pruning is generally in April-May, and after pruning it can promote root sprouting and growth, making the spring shoot period lag behind the flowering and fruiting period. In this way, new shoot sprouting can be prevented from competing with flowering and fruiting for nutrients, thereby increasing the fruit-setting rate. Autumn pruning is generally in October-November, mainly to promote flower bud differentiation in the plant. Vigorous water shoots that sprout later should be pruned in time, which can save nutrients and promote flower bud differentiation.
