How to fertilize guava

Guava blooms all year round and has a long fruiting period, so its nutrient consumption is relatively high. Therefore, when planting, if you want to keep getting high yields, fertilization is an important measure. Only by meeting the nutrient needs of the fruit tree can you achieve high yields and increase returns. So how should guava be fertilized? Let's take a look.

1. Nutrient requirements

Research shows that for every 100 kg of guava fruit produced, the tree consumes 1.83 kg of nitrogen, 0.39 kg of phosphorus, 1.63 kg of potassium, 0.9 kg of calcium, and several other elements. Among these, the three most needed are nitrogen, potassium and calcium. What is needed is calcium fertilizer, and unlike many crops, guava has a relatively high demand for calcium, even far exceeding phosphorus. Therefore, in production, attention should be paid to the application of calcium fertilizer. In addition, the nutrient requirements of guava are closely related to factors such as its variety, yield and pruning.

2. Fertilizing young trees

The purpose of fertilizing young trees is mainly to promote their growth so they quickly form a high-yielding canopy. Generally, before planting, base fertilizer needs to be applied. The base fertilizer is mainly farmyard manure such as compost, manure, and human and livestock manure, and it must be fermented and decomposed before application. Generally, if there is no farmyard manure, 10-15 kg of nitrogen, potassium and calcium fertilizer can be applied per plant, or 1 kg of superphosphate can also be applied. In addition to applying base fertilizer, timely topdressing should also be done in combination with pruning, mainly with farmyard manure and with reduced application of quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer. Generally, topdressing is done twice a year. The first time is in August-September, applying 20-30 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 0.5 kg of compound fertilizer per plant; the second time is in May-June, applying 2 kg of compound fertilizer and foliar fertilizer per plant.

3. Fertilizing fruiting trees

Guava can bloom once a year, and the fertilization of fruiting trees should be determined by the flowering and fruiting stages. Fertilization should be done 3-4 times a year. Generally, fertilization begins in February-March when new buds sprout, and a flower fertilizer is applied once in March-April to provide sufficient nutrients for flowering and fruiting. In May, when the fruit expands, fruit-setting fertilizer is applied. At this stage, fertilizer should be applied once every 1-2 months to promote the beginning of fruit expansion. In winter, attention should be paid to winter fertilizer, which can restore tree vigor as quickly as possible and lay a solid foundation for high yields the following year. Generally, in spring, organic fertilizer is emphasized, which can increase the soil's organic matter content, improve soil structure and enhance root vitality, while flower fertilizer and fruit-setting fertilizer mainly use nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer to promote plant growth.
