Guava planting and management techniques

Guava is a tropical fruit that mainly grows in South China. It is also known as bale, bazi, and jishiguo. It has a good taste and high nutritional value, and is deeply favored by consumers. So how should it be managed during planting? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction.

1. Soil management

Soil management mainly consists of loosening the soil and mulching. Loosening the soil can improve soil structure and increase soil permeability, helping the root system obtain what it needs. Generally, after spring begins, the whole orchard should be loosened once. Loosen the soil starting from beyond about half the radius of the tree canopy, to a depth of about 15 cm, and watering can be carried out half a month after loosening. Mulching, on the other hand, is for keeping warm and retaining moisture, and it can also prevent weeds. After watering, straw or stalks and other materials can be used as mulch, which can retain moisture during the dry season, prevent underground pest damage, and at the same time increase the soil organic matter content.

2. Fertilization management

When fertilizing, it is recommended to apply more organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer can not only improve soil structure and increase soil organic matter content, but also improve the plant's disease resistance and reduce the harm of pests and diseases. Generally, organic fertilizer needs to be applied twice a year. One time is in April, which is the period of flowering and fruit setting, when more nutrients are needed, so fertilizer should be applied heavily, generally 15-20 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per plant. The other time is in September, generally applying 2-3 kg of organic fertilizer and 0.5-1 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per plant, mixing them evenly and then applying them with deep plowing in ring-shaped trenches or holes along under the tree canopy.

3. Shaping and pruning

Pruning of young trees is mainly for shaping, with the goal of forming the tree canopy early and expanding it. Pinch the tips before and after the fruit-setting period to promote the emergence of new shoots, and for shoots that have not borne fruit, leave 30 cm and pinch the tips to promote them becoming fruit-bearing mother branches. In addition, in winter, dead branches, residual branches, crossing branches, and pest- and disease-damaged branches should be pruned off. For fruit-bearing trees, pruning is mainly to control excessive vigor and promote high yield. Prune lightly before fruiting and prune heavily during the full fruit period, so as to balance vegetative growth and reproductive growth.
