How bananas reproduce

As we all know, most plants reproduce through seeds, and some special plants reproduce through other means. The banana, a fruit familiar in our country, has no seeds, so it cannot be propagated by sowing. So how do bananas reproduce? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction.

1. Sucker propagation

Sucker propagation is a relatively traditional method of banana cultivation, mainly using banana sword suckers and maiden suckers for propagation. Sword suckers generally emerge in November of the previous year and break through the ground after the climate warms following the Beginning of Spring; they are red in color and are generally dug up and planted in spring from March to May. Maiden suckers generally emerge in autumn from August to October and temporarily wither during dry, low-temperature periods; they are generally dug up and planted in spring from February to March.

2. Tuber propagation

Tuber propagation is generally used in production to cultivate large numbers of sprouting seedlings. The underground stem of a plant that has not yet flowered or of a large sucker is used as material, cut into evenly sized small pieces, with each piece required to carry 1-2 buds. After cutting, apply plant ash to the wounds, place them in a shady spot to dry, then lay them flat on the seedbed surface at a row spacing of 15 cm with the buds facing up, and cover with soil and straw. They are generally planted in November-December, sprout in spring of the following year in January-February, and when they have grown to 40-50 cm in May-June they can be dug up for permanent planting.

3. Division propagation

Division propagation also uses suckers for propagation. When a sucker has grown to more than 40 cm, it can be divided off and kept as the mother plant or seedling for the next generation. Division involves digging away the soil beside the sucker and using a tool to separate it from the mother plant. After digging it out, cut off overly long and damaged roots, apply plant ash, and place it in a shady spot to dry in the shade, after which it can be planted.

4. Tissue culture

This is generally used to cultivate disease-free seedlings and to raise seedlings in large quantities. It is currently widely applied in production. It uses rapid tissue-culture propagation technology, which can not only obtain a large number of seedlings in a short time, but also remove diseases such as mosaic virus, clearly improving yield.
