Fertilization Techniques for Green Jujube

Green jujube is a tropical and subtropical fruit. It is crisp and sweet, with high nutritional value, containing large amounts of vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus. Because of its attractive fruit shape, it is also known as the "tropical small apple." To grow green jujube well, fertilization is crucial. Below, let's take a look at the fertilization techniques for green jujube with the editor.

1. Fertilizer Requirements

Green jujube grows rapidly, and in addition to its fruit being very tall, it also requires heavy pruning every year, so its fertilizer demand is extremely high, and the types of fertilizers needed are also quite numerous. According to research, producing every 100 kg of green jujube requires consuming 43.8 grams of pure nitrogen, 7.5 grams of pure phosphorus, 101 grams of pure potassium, as well as some calcium, magnesium and iron. Its growth cannot be separated from nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium elements, among which the demand for potassium is 2-3 times that of nitrogen. During production, more potassium fertilizer should be applied to increase yield. In addition, the demand for magnesium is also relatively high, at 3 times that of phosphorus, while calcium is about 60% of phosphorus, so attention must be paid to the supply of these trace elements in the market.

2. Fertilization for Young Trees

For young trees that have not yet fruited and are 5 years old, fertilization should follow the principles of frequent light application, small amounts with more frequent applications, and light first then concentrated. In spring, summer and autumn, fertilizer should be applied once a month. In spring, nitrogen fertilizer is mainly used to promote flower bud differentiation; in summer, phosphorus fertilizer is mainly used to promote strong branch growth; in autumn, potassium fertilizer is mainly used to accelerate the transport of plant nutrients, enabling flowering and fruiting, and laying the foundation for high yield.

3. Fertilization for Fruiting Trees

For adult trees that have already fruited, fertilizer should be applied four times a year. The first is base fertilizer, applied in March-April after fruit harvest, to supplement the nutrients consumed by the plant, promote rapid recovery of tree vigor, and lay the foundation for a bumper harvest the following year. Generally, 40-50 kg of decomposed farmyard manure is applied per plant, and an appropriate amount of calcium, magnesium and other micro-fertilizers can also be applied at the same time. The second is flower fertilizer, applied in June-July to promote flower bud differentiation, mainly using quick-acting nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer. If the plant grows excessively, less nitrogen fertilizer should be applied, with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as the main ones. The third is fruit-setting fertilizer, applied in September-October to increase the fruit-setting rate and promote fruit development, mainly using nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. The fourth is fruit-strengthening fertilizer, applied in December-January, mainly using potassium fertilizer to promote fruit expansion and improve yield and quality.
