How to Grow Cherries? A Detailed Guide to Cherry Planting Methods and Techniques
Cherries on the market today fall mainly into three types: Chinese cherry, Nanking cherry, and sweet cherry (European sweet cherry). Cherry is a very popular fruit, and at present cherries in China are mainly grown in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Gansu and other places. Because production is relatively low, market prices are relatively high. So today we will teach you how to grow cherries. Let's take a look at the content below.

1. Seedbed preparation
Cherries have no particular requirements for soil, so we can be relatively relaxed about choosing and preparing the seedbed. Generally, the seedbed site should be in a wind-sheltered area. After clearing the seedbed thoroughly, loosen and level the soil, apply plenty of farmyard manure to the seedbed, break up the soil clods finely, and finally open furrows and make beds. When the surface soil temperature rises back to about 10 degrees, you can begin raising seedlings.
2. Seedling cultivation
There are four methods for cultivating cherry saplings: the seedling method, also called seed propagation; cuttings propagation; layering; and grafting. Each propagation method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Cherry saplings grown from seed grow slowly and have a low germination rate; cuttings propagation has a relatively high survival rate, but management is relatively more complicated; layering propagation produces relatively large variation in varieties; and grafting propagation yields high-quality fruit and has a short growth cycle, but grafting techniques are not yet fully mature. Whichever propagation method is used, we need to pay attention to the management of water, temperature, light, ventilation and nutrients during the seedling period, so that healthy cherry seedlings can be cultivated.
3. Field preparation and improvement
Cherries like light, warmth, moisture and fertility, so when choosing a planting site it is best to choose according to its growth characteristics. Cherry trees are suited to growing in sunny, wind-sheltered areas close to a water source with fertile soil. The soil texture is best sandy loam, as this kind of soil has good permeability and good fertilizer and water retention. Finally, apply base fertilizer to the field, mainly decomposed livestock manure or barnyard manure, together with a small amount of compound fertilizer, and carry out pit cultivation.
4. Transplanting and planting out
There are only four points to pay attention to when transplanting cherry saplings. First, when transplanting, it is best to pull them out together with the base soil, so that the root system of the cherry sapling is not damaged and the survival rate of the sapling can be improved. Second, the distance between planting holes: row spacing is generally 4 m and plant spacing is 3 m. Third, when planting, we should lift the sapling upward, hold the sapling upright, and then fill in the soil. Finally, after filling the soil, compact the ground and water it once.
5. Field management
After the young trees are planted and survive, what we need to do is water and topdress regularly, while paying attention to reasonable management of the young trees, cultivating the tree canopy of the cherry trees, and maintaining tree vigor. After the cherry trees bloom and bear fruit, we need to carry out water and fertilizer management according to the cherry's branch and leaf growth period, flowering period, fruit period and post-harvest period, and carry out intertillage and earthing up from time to time. Finally, we must also pay attention to preventing the effects of frost damage and pests and diseases on the cherry trees.
The above is the cherry tree planting method we want to share with you today. In fact, there is still a lot of knowledge we need to master about topdressing, watering, preventing frost damage, pests and diseases, and so on.
