Methods and Technical Points for Promoting Flower Bud Differentiation in Longan
Flower bud differentiation in longan is the foundation for flower formation, and flowers determine fruit, so the quality of flower bud differentiation is directly related to the yield and quality of that year. Therefore, doing a good job of longan flower bud differentiation has an obvious improving effect on yield and quality. So how should longan flower bud differentiation be promoted? Let's take a look together.

1. Chemical shoot control
For trees with excessively strong vigor, ethephon can be sprayed in November to December, which can obviously inhibit winter shoots and promote flower bud differentiation. When autumn shoots appear or winter shoots have already sprouted, ethephon can be sprayed at this time, but attention should be paid to the concentration. It can force the winter leaves to drop while retaining the young stems and their growing points. If the effect is not obvious, the concentration can be increased and it can be sprayed once more. When spraying, it is best to target the leaf surface and leaf underside, and never repeatedly spray the same planting or the same branch or trunk, so as to avoid causing fruit drop and being unfavorable to later growth.
2. Apply potassium fertilizer in winter
Longan has a relatively large demand for potassium, and increasing the application of potassium fertilizer in winter can obviously improve its cold and freezing resistance, enhance its stress resistance, and benefit flower bud differentiation and formation. Generally, 1.5-2 kg of potassium chloride is applied per plant, usually applied in a ring-shaped trench in December. If the soil is too dry, an appropriate amount of water can be applied after fertilizing. At the same time, during the thawing period, a low-concentration solution of monopotassium phosphate and potassium chloride can be used for foliar fertilization 2-3 times, sprayed once a week.
3. Moderate girdling
Girdling is also a commonly used measure in production to promote flower bud differentiation, generally carried out after autumn shoots have fully aged and before winter shoots sprout. It can be done on primary or secondary branches, but girdling is usually not carried out on the main trunk. Girdling is carried out at a relatively smooth spot 10-15 cm from the branch, and the girdling width should be controlled at 0.2-0.3 cm, with the depth reaching the xylem, but it should not damage the young tender xylem, so as to avoid causing irreversible damage to the plant. After girdling, the wound should be disinfected well, so as to prevent pathogens from invading through the wound and causing the plant to become infected with disease.
4. Tie with iron wire
For young fruit-bearing trees, because the tree vigor is relatively weak, girdling is not suitable. At this time, the method of tying with iron wire can be used to promote flower bud differentiation. When tying the iron wire, attention should be paid not to use too much force, so as to avoid cracking the bark. The time for ring tying is also determined by the thickness of the trunk, and changes in the leaves can also be observed. When the leaves turn yellow, it should be removed in time to restore tree vigor as soon as possible.
