What issues need attention when growing jackfruit?

Jackfruit is a typical tropical fruit. Its appearance is actually very similar to that of durian, but they are indeed two completely different things. Jackfruit is also highly nutritious, and it can be said that the whole plant is valuable: both the flesh and the sap have detoxifying and cough-relieving effects. So do you know what issues need attention when growing jackfruit? Follow along with the editor below to learn about the precautions for growing it.

1. Growing climate

Jackfruit is a typical tropical fruit, so it is naturally suited to being grown in a tropical climate. Moreover, its growing conditions have not changed much to date, and it is generally planted in humid tropical areas. Jackfruit likes warmth and moisture, which also means that if it is grown under conditions that do not meet its requirements, success is very unlikely.

2. Planting time

Jackfruit can actually be planted all year round, but to increase the survival rate of planting and ensure the later growth and development of jackfruit, we still need to pay some attention when choosing the planting time. The best planting times are March and April each spring, and from September to November each autumn. Jackfruit planted during these two periods has the highest survival rate, and its resistance is also relatively strong.

3. Temperature and light

Jackfruit has very high temperature requirements for growing. If the temperature does not reach the standard required for cultivation, then the chance of successfully growing jackfruit is not great. Based on an analysis of the basic growing conditions of jackfruit, the suitable annual average temperature for its growth should be at least around 22 degrees, and preferably above 22 degrees. In winter, when the temperature is at its lowest, it must not fall below 13 degrees, otherwise the jackfruit tree will suffer cold damage, which will seriously affect yield. In addition, jackfruit has a relatively high demand for light, requiring at least eight hours or more of sunlight per day, so the planting site should be chosen on a sunny plot.

4. Soil and fertilizer management

The soil at the planting site is best if it is a plot with deep soil, loose texture, sufficient fertility and good water retention. Next, the area near the planting site should have convenient transportation and good drainage. Jackfruit's fertilization technique is the key to its high yield and high quality. During the young tree stage of jackfruit, we mainly use nitrogen fertilizer, and it should be used together with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. In addition, during the later topdressing process, we need to reasonably use fertilizer types and amounts according to its different growth stages and its continued fertilizer needs. We cannot fertilize arbitrarily, otherwise the harm to jackfruit will be very great.

5. Pruning and flower and fruit thinning

During the growing process of jackfruit, we should also pay attention to pruning its tree shape, branches and canopy, and it needs to be pruned according to certain principles. We should maintain the tree shape of jackfruit while also ensuring the number of fruiting branches, and at the same time control the structure of the canopy as well as the distance between branches at all levels. Flower and fruit thinning is something many people overlook during the growing process. If the goal is to improve the economic benefits of jackfruit, then during the full flowering stage and the full fruiting stage it is best to carry out flower and fruit thinning, so as to avoid a large amount of fruit drop later caused by insufficient nutrient supply, which would seriously reduce yield.
