What to Do When Strawberry Stems and Petals Turn Red

When it comes to strawberries, many people may quietly start drooling; it is fair to say that the strawberry is truly a very charming fruit. At present, more and more strawberries are being grown in greenhouses on the market, so quite a few growers are asking: what causes the stems and petals of strawberries to turn red, is it a disease? What should be done? So today, let us answer this question for everyone.

1. Causes of Reddening Strawberry Stems

If the stems of strawberries show reddening, there are many possible causes. First, it may be due to excessively low winter temperatures, which lead to a low absorption rate of phosphorus, so the nutrients in the strawberry leaves cannot be transported, ultimately producing anthocyanins and turning the stems red. Second, as the number of years of strawberry cultivation increases, relatively aged stems and leaves will also show reddening, which is a normal phenomenon of natural decline. There is also the fact that during cultivation, field management tasks such as watering, fertilizing and loosening the soil were not handled properly, which can also cause strawberry stems to turn red. Finally, unsuitable growing conditions, such as excessively high or low growing temperatures, excessively high or low humidity, poor soil permeability, poor drainage and so on, will all affect the normal growth of strawberries and cause the stems to turn red.

2. Causes of Reddening Strawberry Petals

Reddening of strawberry petals is mainly caused by two reasons. The first reason is that the flowering period of strawberries coincides with low-temperature weather, and under such conditions the anthocyanin content increases, so the petals we see appear red, sometimes even purplish red; if temperature regulation is not carried out in time, leaf curling and death may even occur. The second reason is that it is a precursor to powdery mildew and gray mold; when field humidity is too high, this will also cause strawberry petals to turn red and will also affect the growth of young fruit. If the disease worsens, it will seriously affect the yield and quality of strawberries, causing them to lose their economic value.

3. Control Methods

Although the reddening of strawberry stems and petals has little effect on the strawberries themselves in the early stage, if control is not carried out in time, the loss to growers will be very large. Generally, when this phenomenon appears in a strawberry field, we need to strengthen field management and reasonably regulate temperature, humidity, permeability and so on. When necessary, Liangguoan can be mixed with an appropriate amount of Diliwang and Wofengsu for spraying. In addition, when petals turn red during the flowering period, it is necessary to prevent gray mold and powdery mildew, so Liangguoan mixed with an appropriate amount of garlic oil should be used for control.

If strawberry stems or petals turn red during the growth process, we first need to conduct a comprehensive analysis based on the season and timing, the affected parts and the causes, so as to effectively prevent and control the occurrence of disease and achieve timely loss reduction.
