How to Treat Jujube Trees with Jujube Witches' Broom Disease? A Detailed Guide to Surgical Treatment Methods
1. Basis. The pathogen of jujube witches' broom disease is a mycoplasma-like organism, which mainly lives in the phloem of jujube trees and is conducted through the tree body via the sieve tube tissue. In winter, the mycoplasma-like organism moves from the aboveground parts to the roots to overwinter, and in the following spring flows back to the branches and trunk with the sap. On this basis, surgical treatment can effectively eliminate the mycoplasma-like organism.
2. Methods
(1) Trunk ring sawing. Before leaf fall of the jujube tree and before sprouting the following year, starting from a point 40 cm above the ground on the trunk, use a saw to cut ring-shaped grooves in the trunk of the jujube tree. The requirement is to saw through the cortex, but not to damage the cambium. According to the severity of the disease, saw 3 to 4 rings per jujube tree, with 20 cm between rings. In this way, the mycoplasma-like organism overwintering in the roots cannot return to the branches and leaves in the following spring. While ring sawing the trunk, remove the diseased and pest-infested branches on the jujube tree, then burn them in a centralized manner.
(2) Main root ring sawing. For severely diseased jujube trees, ring sawing the trunk alone is not enough; the main roots must also be ring sawed. Method: dig away the soil around the roots to expose the base of the main root, then use a saw to cut ring-shaped grooves at the base of the main root, so that the sieve tubes of the phloem are blocked.
(3) Root cutting. While ring sawing the main root, also cut off the lateral roots in the same orientation as the diseased witches' broom branches, in order to eliminate the mycoplasma-like organism in the lateral roots.
