I. Overview:

Peach blossoms were appreciated by people very early on, with large, brightly colored flowers that are delicate and charming. As early as the Spring and Autumn period, the "Book of Songs" already contained praise in the line "The peach tree is young and elegant, brilliant are its flowers." To date, there is a cultivation history of more than 3000 years, and the germplasm resources are very rich. Spring is the season when peach blossoms bloom in full splendor, and across the north and south of the Yangtze River they appear like a stretch of morning glow. In the south, because "red peach" sounds similar to "grand prospects," whenever the Lunar New Year festival arrives, people always insert a few branches of peach blossom or buy back a pot of Shouxing peach, hoping for grand prospects and health and longevity in the coming year.

II. Ecological Characteristics:

Native to northwestern China. It prefers a warm, humid environment with ample sunlight. It is cold-tolerant, tolerant of high temperatures and drought, but not tolerant of moisture or waterlogging. The optimum growth temperature is 15-25°C, and in winter it can withstand low temperatures of -15°C. The soil should preferably be fertile loam with good drainage.

III. Propagation Techniques:

1. Grafting: Generally, budding is used from August to October, and stem grafting is used in spring and autumn. Wild peach seedlings are used as rootstock; the seeds are stratified in sand and sown in spring, and the seedlings are used as rootstock in the autumn of the same year. In the north, mountain peach can be used as rootstock. Cleft grafting is carried out in spring when the buds begin to swell, and the survival rate is high.

2. Sowing: Spring sowing or autumn sowing. Subjecting the seeds to cold sand stratification to promote cracking of the seed coat, or treating them by cracking the shell and soaking the seeds, can increase the seed germination rate.

IV. Cultivation Points:

It prefers deep, fertile sandy loam with good drainage. Planting is carried out in early spring or after leaf fall in autumn and winter. During the growing period, maintain ventilation and light penetration. In summer, pinch the tips of vigorously growing branches, and in winter properly shorten long branches to encourage the formation of more flowering branches. In winter, dig trenches around the trunk and apply fertilizer.

V. Pest and Disease Control:

It is often affected by leaf curl disease and brown rot, which can be sprayed with a 1000-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder. Pests include aphids, leafhoppers, and red spider mites, which can be killed by spraying with a 1500-fold dilution of 0.5% abamectin emulsifiable concentrate.
