Wanxiu pear is a new high-quality late-ripening pear variety
Wanxiu pear is a new late-ripening, high-quality pear variety bred by the Korea Horticultural Research Institute through crossing Dan pear (Singo pear) with Wansanji (Okusankichi), and it is currently the main late-ripening pear cultivar being developed on a large scale in Korea. In 1998, Korean merchants invested in establishing orchards in Jiaodong and other areas of China, introducing this variety into China. After several years of trial planting and observation, it is considered that Wanxiu pear has large fruit, excellent quality, extremely good storage tolerance, and is easy to manage, making it suitable for fruit growers to develop and plant on a large scale under current conditions.
This variety has a vigorous tree habit, strong branching ability, and upright branches. It mainly bears fruit on axillary flower buds and short fruit branches, with strong continuous fruiting ability, and the alternate bearing phenomenon is not obvious, giving high and stable yields. After top grafting on large trees, the yield in the second year is about 1200 kg per 667 sq m, and young seedlings planted in the third year reach a yield of 1000-1200 kg per 667 sq m. The fruit is large, with an average single fruit weight of 620 g and a maximum single fruit weight of 2000 g. The fruit is oblate, with a flat and round fruit top, a smooth and even fruit surface, no russet spots, and a glossy appearance of beautiful yellowish brown, very attractive. The flesh is white and semi-translucent, with a delicate texture, few stone cells, no gritty residue, abundant juice, and a delicious taste. The soluble solids content is 14%-15%, and the quality is excellent. The fruit ripens in early to mid-October. Under general conditions it can be stored for about 4 months, and under low-temperature cold storage it can be stored for more than 6 months, and the flavor is even better after storage. It is currently the late-ripening pear variety with the best storage tolerance, the best quality, and the best cultivation prospects among the pear varieties cultivated in China.
Wanxiu pear has strong adaptability and stress resistance, a wide suitable planting range, strong resistance to scab and black spot, and is drought-resistant, cold-resistant, and tolerant of poor soil. It has abundant pollen, but a low self-fruit-setting rate, so Yuanhuang pear is suitable as a pollinator tree when planting.
