On May 20, the "Early-maturing and High-yield Cultivation Technology for Feizixiao Lychee" passed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal of Maoming City. This technology breaks the traditional practice of delaying the flowering period of Feizixiao to obtain fruit, concentrates nutrients for flowering and fruiting, and effectively solves the problem of "many flowers but few fruits" in Feizixiao. With this technology, the average annual yield per tree reaches 25.59-48.47 kg, an increase of 17.63%-28.07% compared with the control; the fruit set of the first batch of flowers accounts for 70%-80%, 40% more than that of trees under ordinary management; the fruit from the first batch of flowers matures 3-5 days earlier.

This technology breaks the traditional practice of delaying the flowering period of Feizixiao to obtain fruit, concentrates nutrients for flowering and fruiting, and effectively solves the problem of "many flowers but few fruits" in Feizixiao. Feizixiao lychee is an early-maturing variety that flowers easily but sets fruit with difficulty. This variety has a large flower quantity and consumes many nutrients. If trees with early flowers and a large flower quantity are allowed to naturally send out flower buds, the phenomenon of "happy flowers, worried fruit" often occurs. Since the late 1990s, in production, Feizixiao lychee has adopted the method of "one wiping, two thinning, three short pruning" to delay the flowering period and reduce the flower quantity, enabling Feizixiao lychee to obtain a bumper harvest in ordinary years; however, the early-maturing characteristics of Feizixiao are greatly reduced, and fruit setting is also unstable if bad weather is encountered during the flowering period and young fruit development period. In addition, because of the delayed flowering period, the fruit is often smaller and the fruit color becomes poorer, making it difficult to meet export requirements.

Therefore, the research group of the "Early-maturing and High-yield Cultivation Technology for Feizixiao Lychee", composed of the Maoming City Fruit Bureau and the Maoming City Fruit Society, based on the characteristics of Feizixiao lychee, such as a well-developed taproot, an extensive root system, vigorous growth, multiple flower flushes, a large flower quantity, and high fertilizer and water consumption, concentrated nutrients for flowering and fruiting, regulated the optimal reproductive environment, advanced the flowering period, and used the first batch of flowers to set fruit. As a result, it not only effectively solved the problem of "many flowers but few fruits" in Feizixiao lychee and improved the high and stable yield performance of fruit setting, but also promoted earlier fruit maturation, enhanced the advantage of early maturity, and won the market.

By applying the new technology, fruit growers can significantly improve production efficiency. According to the analysis of sample surveys of per-tree yield for three consecutive years from 2004 to 2006, the average annual yield per tree using this technology is 25.59-48.47 kg, an increase of 17.63%-28.07% compared with the control. The fruit set of the first batch of flowers accounts for 70%-80%, 40% more than that of trees under ordinary management. The fruit from the same first batch of flowers also matures 3-5 days earlier. Compared with delayed management, the fruit matures 7-10 days earlier, and the fruit price increases by 2-4 yuan per kg.

Experts from the appraisal committee believe that the promotion and application of this technology can promote the transformation of the mid-maturing lychee, which is planted on an excessively large area in Maoming City, optimize the variety structure of lychee, and reduce the @#@136@#@ pressure of concentrated market listing.
