Yesterday, a reporter learned from the Science and Technology Department of the Autonomous Region that the Science and Technology Department, together with the Forestry Department, organized experts in forestry, fruits and vegetables, food and other fields to conduct an on-site acceptance inspection of the room-temperature preservation research portion of the region's first nationally tendered project, "Key Technology Development and Research on Storage, Transportation and Preservation of Lingwu long jujube." The results showed that the preservation period of Lingwu long jujube increased 10-fold compared with before, achieving 30-day room-temperature storage.

It is reported that Lingwu long jujube has long entered high-end markets such as the southeast coast and Hong Kong, China, but because Lingwu long jujube is prone to water loss, alcoholic fermentation, shriveling, flesh softening, browning and rotting after picking, its preservation period at room temperature is only 3 to 5 days, greatly hindering the market shelf life of Lingwu long jujube. Last year, Lingwu long jujube preservation technology was listed as a major project of the autonomous region's science and technology research program and was openly tendered nationwide. The winning bidders - the College of Food Engineering at Tianjin University of Science and Technology, the Research Institute of Forest Resources and Varieties of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, and the Institute of Agricultural Product Storage and Processing of the Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences - carried out technical research in 3 areas: disinfection and sterilization, application of special preservation films, and preservation coating agents and coatings.

After nearly two years of research, 3 sets of matching room-temperature preservation technologies were developed. Lingwu long jujube achieved 30-day room-temperature storage, with a sound fruit rate of 91.8%, meeting commercial standards. The Science and Technology Department will organize domestic authoritative experts next year to systematically and comprehensively evaluate the 3 preservation technologies and determine the main preservation technology and supporting processes to be promoted in the industry.

(II) Cultivation management
1. Seedling raising: Select a nursery site with flat terrain and smooth drainage and irrigation, preferably sandy loam or light loam. Use wild jujube pits or wild jujube kernels as rootstock seeds. Select one-year-old jujube head branches from mature fruiting trees that are pure in variety, robust in growth, high-yielding, high-quality and free of pests and diseases as scions for grafting propagation.
2. Orchard establishment: Select a plot with deep soil layers, fertile soil, and convenient drainage, irrigation and transportation. Choose sandy loam or light loam with a groundwater level below 1.5 m, a mature soil layer of more than 30 cm, a pH value of 7.5 to 8.5, and relatively high organic matter content.
3. Training and pruning: Use spindle-shaped, small-crown and open-center tree forms. Winter pruning is mainly thinning, with heading back of jujube heads to cultivate scaffold branches. Summer pruning mainly includes bud removal, pinching, branch bending and branch thinning measures. Planting density should not exceed 110 plants per mu.
4. Fertilizer and water management: Balanced fertilization, promoting early and controlling later. Mainly use organic fertilizer, and apply additional fertilizer at the right time in proportion. Pay attention to drought prevention in the early stage and irrigate in time; control irrigation after mid-August.
5. Flower and fruit management: Adopt measures such as pinching, foliar fertilization during the flowering period, bark girdling (ring cutting) on vigorously growing trees during the fruiting period, and releasing bees during the flowering period to increase the fruit-setting rate. Regulate tree vigor, maintain a reasonable load, and improve fruit quality.

Where can you buy saplings? Generally, sapling shops sell them. Otherwise, you can also buy them online.
