Wanxiu Pear: Introduction to a High-Quality New Late-Maturing Pear Variety

Wanxiu Pear is a new late-maturing, high-quality pear variety developed by the Korean Horticultural Research Institute through crossing Danli (Single Pear) with Wansanji (Late Sanji), and it is currently the main late-maturing pear cultivar being developed on a large scale in Korea. In 1998, Korean merchants invested in establishing orchards in China's Jiaodong and other areas, introducing this variety into China. After several years of trial planting and observation, it is believed that Wanxiu Pear has large fruit, excellent quality, extremely good storage tolerance, and is easy to manage, making it suitable for large-scale development and planting by fruit growers under current conditions.

The variety has strong tree vigor, strong branching ability, and upright branches. It bears fruit mainly on axillary flower buds and short fruiting branches, with strong continuous fruiting ability and no obvious alternate bearing. It is high-yielding and stable-yielding. After top-grafting on large trees, the yield in the 2nd year reaches about 1200 kg per 667 sq m, and young seedlings planted in the 3rd year reach a yield of 1000-1200 kg per 667 sq m. The fruit is large, with an average single fruit weight of 620 g and a maximum single fruit weight of 2000 g. The fruit is oblate, with a flat and round top, a smooth and even skin without russet spots, glossy, and a beautiful yellowish-brown appearance that is very attractive. The flesh is white and semi-translucent, fine and tender, with few stone cells and no grit, juicy, and delicious. The soluble solids content is 14%-15%, and the quality is excellent. The fruit ripens in early to mid-October. Under normal conditions, it can be stored for about 4 months, and under low-temperature cold storage, it can be stored for more than 6 months, with the flavor becoming even better after storage. It is currently the late-maturing pear variety with the best storage tolerance, the best quality, and the best cultivation prospects among pear varieties grown in China.

Wanxiu Pear has strong adaptability and stress resistance, a wide suitable planting range, strong resistance to pear scab and black spot, drought resistance, cold resistance, and tolerance to poor soil. It has abundant pollen, but a low self-pollination fruit-setting rate, so Yuanhuang Pear is suitable to be selected as a pollinizer when planting.
