What variety is E Pear No. 1, and what are its characteristics?
The new ultra-early-ripening pear variety E Pear No. 1 was bred by the Fruit, Tea and Sericulture Research Institute of the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and passed the approval of the Hubei Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee in February 2002, with the trade name Jinshui Zaoguan. Demonstration bases have now been established in Hubei Province as well as in Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian and Zhejiang, and many places have listed E Pear No. 1 as the main cultivar for local early-ripening pear production.
The fruit of this variety is nearly round, with an average single-fruit weight of 230 grams, and the fruit shape is uniform and consistent. The skin is green, thin, with a slight waxy luster, and the fruit dots are small. The fruit surface is smooth and glossy, with a beautiful appearance. The flesh is white, fine and tender, juicy, with very few stone cells, containing 0.5%-12.1% soluble solids and 0.16% total acid, sweet in taste, with excellent quality. The ripening period in the Wuhan area is early in the month, and it can be harvested and marketed by the end of June. E Pear No. 1 has good early fruiting ability and high yield; the average yield per plant in the third year after planting is 5.1 kg, and the yield per mu at full fruiting stage is 2500 kg. There is no pre-harvest fruit drop, and alternate bearing is not obvious.
Key points of cultivation techniques: The suitable pollinizer varieties for E Pear No. 1 are Zaosu and Xiangnan, with a configuration ratio of 3-4:1; the suitable row and plant spacing for planting is 4 m x 2-3 m, and moderately close planting may be used on barren slope and ridge land. The suitable tree shape is the central-leader with tiers form, and on the basis of winter pruning, summer pruning should be strengthened. Emphasis should be placed on flower and fruit thinning; after fruit thinning, the leaf-to-fruit ratio is 25-30:1, and one fruit should be left for every 20 cm of space within the tree canopy. Fertilization should mainly use organic fertilizer and farmyard manure to improve fruit quality.
