Key Points of Irrigation Techniques and Detailed Watering Methods for Jujube Orchards
Although jujube trees have strong drought resistance and heavy rainfall is unfavorable to jujube production, if there is drought and a lack of water, the growth and development of jujube trees are also adversely affected. During the growing season, jujube trees require a relative soil moisture content of 65%-70%. This is especially true during the flowering period and the rapid fruit growth period before pit hardening, when they are very sensitive to soil moisture. When the relative soil moisture content is less than 55% or greater than 80%, young fruit growth is hindered, and flower and fruit drop is severe. During the slow growth period after fruit pit hardening, when the relative moisture content drops to 30%-50%, the flesh cells lose turgor pressure and soften, and growth stops. In the northern jujube-growing regions, the early stage of jujube tree growth occurs during the dry season, so irrigation should be given even more attention.
I. Irrigation Periods
1. Bud-promoting water: Irrigating before bud break is beneficial for bud break, the growth of jujube heads and jujube hanging shoots, flower bud differentiation, and improving flowering quality.
2. Flowering-stage water: Jujube trees are quite sensitive to moisture during the flowering period, because the flowering period is a time of rapid growth for all organs, with intense competition for water and nutrients, and jujube pollen germination requires relatively high humidity. Insufficient water leads to poor pollination and fertilization, reducing the fruit-setting rate. At the same time, the flowering period of jujube trees occurs during the dry and windy season in the north. If water is insufficient, the phenomenon of "scorched flowers" is quite severe, causing a large number of flower drops. Therefore, the flowering period is a critical time for jujube water needs. Irrigating during the flowering period not only results in a high fruit-setting rate, but also promotes rapid fruit development.
3. Fruit-setting water: In early July, during the rapid growth period of young fruit, irrigating together with topdressing can promote cell division and expansion, and is the foundation for fruit enlargement. If water is insufficient during this period, fruit growth is inhibited and yield is reduced, lowering jujube fruit quality.
4. Wintering water: Watering before the soil freezes can increase the cold resistance of jujube trees through the winter. The specific watering time and frequency should be adapted to local conditions. In mountainous areas and places without watering conditions, multiple cultivations should be carried out to store water and preserve soil moisture, so as to solve the water needs of jujube tree growth and fruiting.
