Why is Fengxiang pear hailed as the king of pears?
Fengxiang pear was developed by the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences from a cross of Nijisseiki x Sanhua. It was introduced to our farm's base in 1999. In 2000, 85% of the trees bore fruit, with an average yield of 2.2 kg per tree. By 2002, the yield reached 38.5 kg per tree, with an average of 29 kg per tree and a per-mu yield of 1523 kg, ranking first among the 36 pear varieties at the base.
This variety has thick, sturdy branches and vigorous growth. One-year-old branches are yellow, and branches in the 2nd and 3rd years are brown, free of rust spots and glossy. It is resistant to high temperatures, tolerant of poor soil, highly adaptable, bears fruit early, produces abundant pollen, and has a high fruit-setting rate with high and stable yields. The fruit is large and tall-round in shape, with an average single-fruit weight of 458 g and a maximum of 875 g. It is light brown, spotless, glossy, and uniform in appearance. When it ripens in early August, it turns golden yellow, with thin skin and white, fine, crisp flesh, no stone cells, a sweet taste with aroma, and a small core. The edible rate is 95%, and the soluble solids content is 14.2%. Its quality is excellent, making it a superior large-fruited variety for export.
Young leaves are deep yellow; mature leaves are elliptical with pointed tips and finely pointed marginal serrations, flat and glossy on the surface, dark green, with fine veins. It has particularly strong resistance to ring rot and black spot, and is relatively resistant to pear rust. It features beautiful appearance, large fruit, high yield, excellent quality, and early marketing. Its selling price is 3 times that of Huanghua pear, with outstanding economic returns, hence it is called the king of pears.
