What are the characteristics of Hongjin Zhen apricot? A detailed explanation of the variety's traits
Hongjin Zhen was preserved from the local superior apricot varieties of Zhaoyuan City through generations of folk selection, eliminating the inferior and keeping the best. It was discovered and organized in 1976, named in 1984, and passed appraisal in 1988, confirming that this variety has the characteristics of vigorous growth, early and high yield, large and attractive fruit, tender and juicy flesh, strong disease resistance and stress resistance, and consistent high yields year after year. In its local area, Hongjin Zhen apricot reaches full bloom from April 10 to 15, with a fruit development period of about 90 days, maturing in early July. The average single fruit weight is 71 g, with a maximum of 167 g. The fruit is oval, with a round or flat top and a prominent suture. The skin is orange-red. The flesh is orange-red, with soluble solids of 13-14%, fine texture and abundant juice, sweet with a slight acidity, and aromatic. Quality is superior. The stone is free. The kernel is sweet. The flesh rate is about 95%, the kernel yield from fresh stone is 38%, and the preserved-fruit yield from fresh fruit is 25-25.8%. It is an excellent variety for fresh eating, processing, and kernel use. The Hongjin Zhen apricot tree grows vigorously, with an open canopy, is drought-tolerant and tolerant of poor soil, highly adaptable, resistant to frost, and lightly affected by disease. Generally, it begins bearing fruit 3 years after planting, reaches 500 kg per mu at 5-6 years, and more than 1,000 kg per mu at about 10 years. Although Hongjin Zhen apricot is extremely disease-resistant, drought-resistant, and high-yielding, because its fruit matures somewhat late, if used as a fresh-eating apricot it is not as good as the earlier-maturing Honghebao and Tai'an Water apricot; however, because it has good processing traits, in addition to being eaten fresh, its value can also be increased through processing. Zhaoyuan once tested using Siberian apricot as rootstock for Hongjin Zhen, which had a certain dwarfing effect, was drought-tolerant and cold-resistant, and bore fruit early and tended to be high-yielding.
