What to Do About Cracked Fruit in Wampee

Wampee is one of the fruits native to southern China. It is nutritious, can be used in medicine, and has the effects of aiding digestion, resolving phlegm and regulating qi, so it is well loved by people. However, during cultivation, fruit cracking often occurs, affecting yield and quality and causing economic losses to fruit growers. So what should be done about cracked fruit in wampee? Let's take a look.

1. Scientific water control

In the late stage of fruit growth in wampee, the fruit begins to expand rapidly and color up. If long-term drought is then followed by rainy weather, the plant begins to absorb sharply increased amounts of water, and the fruit expands within a short time. However, the development of the rind and the expansion of the flesh are not synchronized, so fruit cracking occurs, which at this point not only affects quality but also reduces yield. Therefore, when the fruit is ripening and during hot, dry weather, water should be replenished in time, either by spraying water on the canopy or by watering, and after rain, drainage should be carried out promptly to increase soil permeability and avoid fruit cracking.

2. Supplementary application of micronutrient fertilizers

During wampee cultivation, many growers do not pay attention to organic fertilizers or trace elements, so their inputs for these are also relatively low, and when fertilizing they mostly rely on compound fertilizers. This leads to long-term deficiency of trace elements such as boron, sulfur, calcium and iron in the plants. These trace elements are important structural components of the wampee rind, and their deficiency reduces the toughness of the rind, making fruit cracking very likely to occur. Therefore, during wampee production, more organic fertilizer must be applied and trace elements supplemented to improve rind toughness and reduce fruit cracking. In addition, during the fruit ripening stage, increasing the application of organic fertilizer has an obvious yield-increasing effect.

3. Bagging

From the fruit expansion stage to ripening, the fruit bagging method can be used, which can prevent and control diseases and pests, sunscald, bird pecking and fruit cracking. At present, special fruit paper bags of various specifications are available on the market. After the plant sets fruit, put the paper bag over the fruit cluster, tie the bag opening tightly around the fruit cluster, and when harvesting, pick the bag and fruit cluster together. Before bagging, the fruit must be disinfected and sterilized. When bagging, be careful not to let the fruit touch the surface of the bag, so as to avoid sunscald.
