Blueberry Propagation Methods

Blueberry, also called bog bilberry or dusi, is a small fruiting shrub originating from North America. Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins and other nutrients needed by the human body, and can help prevent aging of the cranial nerves, strengthen and protect vision, strengthen the heart, soften blood vessels and enhance human immunity. So how are blueberries generally propagated? Today we will mainly learn about blueberry propagation methods.

1. Selection of the nursery site

Blueberries have certain requirements for the planting site. Generally, soil rich in organic matter with a soil pH of 4.0-5.5 is chosen, and the drainage and irrigation system near the planting site should be complete, transportation should be well developed, and it should be far from pollution sources. Land preparation involves deep plowing, breaking the soil clods into fine pieces and cleaning impurities from the nursery site thoroughly. Finally, before propagation, the propagation substrate also needs to be prepared and the base fertilizer applied. Once everything is ready, you can proceed to the next step.

2. Propagation time

As for the propagation time, we usually propagate in spring every year. This is when blueberries have the strongest vitality, so the emergence rate and survival rate will be much higher. The best propagation time in spring is between February and April each year. Of course, when propagating, the soil temperature of the planting site should preferably be 10 degrees or above, otherwise the germination speed will be very slow.

3. Propagation methods

There are four blueberry propagation methods: seed propagation, cutting propagation, division propagation and grafting propagation. At present, the most commonly used methods are seed propagation and cutting propagation, as these two have higher survival rates and produce top-quality blueberries. Seed propagation requires variable temperature treatment and soaking with gibberellin to increase the seed germination rate. For cutting propagation, strong branches of excellent varieties free from pests and diseases are selected, then cut into small sections five or six centimeters long, and the cut ends are treated with a press before propagation. As for division propagation, the new shoots produced by the mother plant are generally selected, dug up in late autumn, cultivated, and planted in spring. Blueberry grafting is the same as grafting other fruit trees; the rootstock and scion must be selected well.

4. Seedling stage management

After propagation, we should water frequently to maintain soil moisture and promote the growth of blueberry roots and new seedlings. However, the amount of watering should not be too large. If the temperature of the nursery site is relatively high, then we need to wait until the temperature drops before watering, otherwise it will affect the growth of blueberry seedlings. Another thing to note is that in May and June, we should pay even more attention to water management. Nutrient management is also quite important at the seedling stage. Generally, we cannot fertilize arbitrarily. If we want to promote seedling growth, it is best to apply an appropriate amount of liquid fertilizer, once a week, and when fertilizing, it should also be combined with watering.
