II. Main characteristics of the varieties
1. Strong disease resistance: In ordinary years, neither the vines nor the fruit get diseased, and no spraying is needed. Even in 2005, when low temperatures and abundant rain occurred throughout the year and grape white rot, downy mildew, and rachis necrosis broke out across the board, Royal Rose, seedless Hanxiangmi, Moli Xiang, and Mizhi grapes still had a bumper harvest.
2. Good taste and high market price: Because Royal Rose is rose-red, has a strong rose fragrance, and is moderately sweet and sour, it can sell for 3 yuan per jin on the Jiutai market; because seedless Hanxiangmi is seedless and its skin is crisp and soft so it can be eaten with the skin, its market price is 4 yuan per jin; because Moli Xiang has a rich jasmine fragrance, it can sell for 5 yuan per jin on the market; although Mizhi is an old variety, because it is a red large-berry variety and is moderately sweet and sour, it also sells for 3 yuan per jin. Vines mature well with no alternate bearing: For ordinary grape varieties in a normal year, if too much fruit is left, the fruiting canes do not mature in autumn (remain green), and the buds do not sprout the following year, causing blind eyes. Even when fruit is left at a normal level, the fruiting canes can only mature by a little more than half. But no matter how many clusters of fruit Royal Rose keeps, its fruiting canes always mature all the way to the tip; under normal fruit retention, the vines of seedless Hanxiangmi, Moli Xiang, and Mizhi mature relatively well. 4. Very cold-resistant: The lowest winter temperature in the Changchun area can reach about minus 34°C. For grape varieties generally grafted onto the cold-resistant rootstock Beta, the soil used for winter protection must be piled at least 20 cm thick over the vines. But for the above grape varieties, a 10 cm thick layer of protective soil is enough for them to overwinter safely, which ordinary varieties cannot match.
5. High rate of grafted seedling formation: Generally, grape varieties grafted onto Beta rootstock can all form seedlings, but their compatibility differs. For those varieties with weak compatibility, it appears on the surface that they have healed, but after planting in the field the seedlings grow weakly, and after fruiting they die because of weak resistance. As long as correct grafting techniques are used, the above grape varieties do not produce bark-included seedlings, and their seedling formation rates are all very high.
