How to Grow Passion Fruit Well

Passion fruit is currently a very popular fruit, not only because it is rich in vitamins, but also because of its extremely high medicinal value and excellent practical value. The economic value of passion fruit on the market is also very considerable, and demand exceeds supply. In fact, planting passion fruit is also very simple, so today we will learn how to grow passion fruit well.

1. Select Good Varieties

Although passion fruit is a fruit that has only been widely promoted in recent years, there are already quite a few varieties. So on the market we see purple passion fruit, yellow passion fruit and some other passion fruits. They differ not only in quality but also in price. To grow passion fruit well, we first need to select good quality varieties, so that the fruit can be high-yielding and high-quality. We should choose varieties with thin skin, lots of flesh, large fruit, strong resistance and a high fruiting rate, such as the currently very popular purple-red passion fruit.

2. Scientific Land Preparation

If passion fruit is to grow well, then soil is the basic condition for high yield. It is best to plant in soil with good drainage, loose texture and sufficient nutrients. There are two ways of land preparation: full cultivation and hole cultivation. Full cultivation is more time-consuming, so hole cultivation is generally chosen. That means digging holes at a certain distance and deep-plowing around each hole. Then apply about 50 jin of organic fertilizer in each hole as base fertilizer, and after that cover it with fine soil, and then wait to plant.

3. Timely Planting

There are two most commonly used planting methods. The first is sowing seeds, and the second is planting by division. But no matter which planting method is used, it is best to sow around March each spring and around September each autumn. These two time periods give the highest survival rate and are more favorable for the growth of passion fruit.

4. Scientific Management

Scientific management is the key to a high yield of passion fruit. First, we need to ensure that the field temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees, and the annual average temperature is best around 18 degrees. Second, passion fruit has strong drought resistance, but it cannot be too dry, so when there is no rainfall, it also needs to be watered appropriately. But if the rainfall is too heavy, it still must be drained in time. Then there is fertilization management. We must fertilize strictly according to the growth characteristics, growth vigor and growth cycle of passion fruit. At the same time, when passion fruit grows to a certain stage, we need to build supports in the field. Also, after passion fruit survives, we need to prune branches to promote the growth of side branches, and afterward at least once a year we need to prune branches and leaves to ensure the yield of passion fruit. Finally, if rainfall occurs during flowering and pollination of passion fruit, then we need to carry out artificial supplementary pollination, so as to ensure the success rate of passion fruit pollination and thus ensure its yield.

5. Disease Control

Passion fruit is a perennial vine plant, so its most common diseases include root rot, phytophthora blight, downy mildew and so on. The most basic cause of these diseases is excessive moisture in the field, while rising temperatures produce pathogens that then infect the plants. For these diseases, we can use chlorothalonil, carbendazim and metalaxyl wettable powder for control. Finally, aphids, mites and other pests also often appear in passion fruit orchards, and trichlorfon, dicofol and yellow sticky boards can be used for control.
