The first fruit of early spring, cherries are in their blooming period. To manage cherry trees well in spring, pay attention to the following three measures:
I. Pay attention to balanced fertilization
Cherry trees, like other plants, need large amounts of mineral elements during growth and development, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, boron, zinc, etc. Without these elements, cherry trees cannot grow and develop normally, and may even show corresponding deficiency symptoms.
II. Treatment of diseased trees
Treatment of diseased trees includes: (1) Prune out diseased branches. For diseased trees with partial branch dieback, at the same time, clear out the roots in the same direction as the dead diseased branches, cut off the rotten roots, and apply compound carbendazim or mancozeb (both at 400-600 times dilution). (2) Clear out dead trees. Clear out trees that died from disease, remove the soil from the tree pit; at the same time, expand the planting hole to 100cm2, 60cm deep, fill in 20cm of farmyard manure and 20cm of new soil, in preparation for replanting trees the following year. (3) Inspect the branches and trunk. Remove egg masses from the branches and trunk.
III. Pruning and shaping the tree
After the tree loses its leaves, the branch structure is relatively clear, making it an ideal time for pruning and shaping. According to production needs, appropriately bend and spread branches. At the same time, cut off from the base the inner-canopy branches, water sprouts on the upper side of branches, and crossing branches that have no flower buds (apply paint after cutting to prevent drying and shrinkage). After fruit picking, combined with summer pruning, remove inner-canopy branches, water sprouts, and others that do not need to be retained. Along with earthing up around the roots, shape the tree basin well and dig drainage ditches well.
